A 100-plus year tradition is reportedly going to be paused in several years.
TCU and Southern Methodist University will pause their rivalry series after the two play one another in 2025, according to multiple reports.
According to Brett McMurphy of Action Network, TCU is indefinitely “pausing” its series with the Mustangs after the 2025 game. The two programs have played each other for 102 years, or since 1915.
Chris Vannini of The Athletic confirmed reports of the impending pause of the series.
The Horned Frogs hold a 51-41-7 advantage over SMU in the Iron Skillet Rivalry. The Mustangs and TCU have split the past two matchups between one another, with the latter gaining victory 42-34 last season after Horned Frogs Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Max Duggan threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns.
TCU is part of a Big 12 Conference that has been active in conference realignment over the past several weeks. Arizona, Arizona State and Utah are set to join the conference in 2024 as well as Colorado, and all four programs announced those plans in late July.
SMU has been involved in expansion discussions, particularly about the possibility of joining the Atlantic Coast Conference from the American Athletic Conference.
