Another week of non-conference games has come and gone within The Big Ten. A few exceptions remain, but for the most part, Big Ten teams will now begin to focus their attention and energies on playing and defeating their conference brethren.

Blowouts Were Still A Theme: Indiana 73, Indiana State 0; Maryland 44, Towson 17; Nebraska 59, HCU 7; Michigan 63, Central Michigan 3; Penn State 52, Villanova 6; Illinois 38, Western Michigan 0; Iowa 47, UMass 7; Rutgers 60, Norfolk State 10. Congratulations to Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, as he earned his 206th victory to become The Big Ten’s winningest football coach in history.

Costly Win For Sparty?: Michigan State defeated Youngstown State, 41-24. The Spartans had offensive linemen Luka Vincic and Conner Moore, running back Makhi Frazier, and wide receiver Nick Marsh all leave the game due to injuries. Michigan State begins Big Ten conference play next week with a game at USC that will kick off at 11pm ET/8pm PT on September 20th.

First Conference Wins Of 2025 For Ducks & Trojans: Oregon 34, Northwestern 14; USC 33, Purdue 17. The Ducks will have a non-conference game against their longtime rivals in the Oregon State Beavers on September 20th, while USC will be welcoming in Michigan State, as written up above.

Sluggish Yet Still Victorious: Ohio State defeated Ohio University 37-9, after only leading the Bobcats 13-3 at the half. Give credit to Ohio University for playing tough against the Buckeyes, but I believe Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will have plenty to work on in the upcoming bye week, especially as the Buckeyes struggled in the red zone repeatedly Saturday evening.

The First Cut Is The Deepest: Alabama 38, Wisconsin 14; California 27, Minnesota 14. Both the Badgers and Golden Gophers fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, as both were defeated in non-conference play.

DeShaun Foster Is The First Coaching Casualty In The Big Ten: UCLA was dominated by New Mexico 35-10, leaving the Bruins at 0-3 on the season. UCLA decided to pull the plug on Foster’s coaching tenure, appointing Tim Skipper as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. “I want to extend my sincere appreciation to DeShaun for his contributions to UCLA Football over the course of many years, first as a Hall of Fame student-athlete, then as an assistant coach and finally as head coach,” said UCLA AD Martin Jarmond. Speculation on who the Bruins may target for their next head coach has already begun in earnest, but UCLA will want to take their time and make sure they have the right man in place to rebuild the UCLA program.

Week two is in the books, and a few of the teams were knocked out of the ranks of the unbeaten. Several dominant performances were on display against overmatched opponents. Below are some initial thoughts on where things stand within The Big Ten after week two ~

You Get A Shutout: Ohio State 70, Grambling State 0; Penn State 34, FIU 0; Nebraska 68, Akron 0; and Minnesota 66, Northwestern State 0. Of this group, Penn State pulled away in the second half, after only leading FIU 10-0 at the half.

The Scoreboard Operators Were Keeping Busy: Oregon 69, Oklahoma State 3; Illinois 45, Duke 19; Indiana 56, Kennesaw State 9; USC 59, Georgia Southern 20; Rutgers 45, Miami University 17; Washington 70, UC Davis 10; Purdue 34, S. Illinois 17; Maryland 20, N. Illinois 9; Northwestern 42, W. Illinois 7. Several of these games had impressive results. Illinois going on the road to play Duke helped to answer skeptics who have questioned how good the Fighting Illini may be in 2025. Oregon continues to look as one of the nation’s best teams, despite the amount of roster turnover from last year’s team. Washington’s Jonah Coleman scored 5 touchdowns in the Huskies’ rout of UC Davis.

Possibly The Game Of The Week In The Conference: Michigan State came back to defeat Boston College 42-40 in 2OT on Saturday night in East Lansing. This is the kind of game that Michigan State needed to win as they continue to build under second year head coach Jonathan Smith.

No Longer Unbeaten: Iowa State 16, Iowa 13; Oklahoma 24, Michigan 13. Both Big Ten teams were on the road and came home with their first loss of the 2025 season. For Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, the loss at Iowa State delayed Ferentz from taking over as the all-time winningest Big Ten coach. Iowa will look to get Ferentz the record in week three when Iowa hosts UMass. Michigan rallied in the second half after being down 14-0 at halftime, but had struggles offensively to ever take the lead against the Sooners.

Still Searching For Their First Win: UNLV defeated UCLA 30-23. The Bruins had a valiant comeback, after being down 23-3 at the half. Too many penalties and too deep of a hole by UCLA were too much to overcome. “I’m just frustrated because when you know we can execute better than we were and put together two halves like I wish we could’ve done, the outcome would’ve been different…” said UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster. UCLA will be looking for his first win of the season when they host New Mexico on September 12th.

UCLA is reportedly hiring Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to fulfill the same role and be the Bruins associate head coach.

According to Pete Thamel and Adam Schefter of ESPN, Bieniemy and UCLA are “finalizing a two-year deal” for him to return to college football. Bieniemy has previous coaching experience in the soon-to-be broken up Pac-12 Conference.

Bieniemy will be part of a new UCLA coaching staff including head coach DeShaun Foster, who succeeds Chip Kelly who departed for the offensive coordinator job at Ohio State.

Bieniemy will bring plenty of NFL coaching experience with him to UCLA, too. He worked as Commanders offensive coordinator last season after five years with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The New Orleans native’s first coaching job came at his alma mater Colorado, coaching running backs from 2001-02. He then coached at UCLA in the same role from 2003-05.

Bieniemy’s first jump to the NFL came in 2006 when he became running backs coach with the Minnesota Vikings. There, he coached future rushing leader Adrian Peterson and earned a promotion to assistant head coach in 2010.

Bieniemy returned to college and was offensive coordinator at Colorado from 2011-12. He then took his first job with the Chiefs as running backs coach from 2013-17.

UCLA named Bruins Hall of Famer DeShaun Foster its next head coach, it announced on Monday.

Foster will succeed Chip Kelly, who was hired to be Ohio State’s offensive coordinator on Friday night.

Foster, a 2022 Broyles Award nominee, has over a decade of college coaching experience.

“This is a dream come true,” Foster stated in a release. “I always envisioned being a Bruin ever since I was young, and now being the head coach at my alma mater is such a surreal feeling, and I’m grateful for this opportunity. The foundation of this program will be built on discipline, respect and enthusiasm. These are phenomenal young men, and I’m excited to hit the ground running.”

Foster played four seasons at UCLA from 1998-2001 earning All-American honors in 2001 after leading the then-Pac-10 Conference with 138.6 rushing yards per game. He finished his Bruins career second with 44 touchdowns score and third with 3,194 rushing yards.

Foster started his coaching career as a student assistant at UCLA from 2012-13 before becoming a graduate assistant in 2014.

He spent one more year at UCLA as Director of Player Development and High School Relations in 2015, then became running backs coach at Texas Tech.

After the 2016 season with the Red Raiders, Foster returned to UCLA as running backs coach serving in the role from 2017-22. He earned a promotion to associate head coach prior to the 2023 season.

Foster was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hal of Fame in 2022.

”While undergoing a comprehensive search for our new head coach, DeShaun resonated from the start and throughout the whole process,” UCLA athletics director Martin Jarmond stated in a release. “We are looking for a coach with integrity, energy and passion; someone who is a great teacher, who develops young men, is a great recruiter and fully embraces the NIL landscape to help our student-athletes. DeShaun checks all of those boxes and then some. He is a leader of men and a true Bruin. I am excited to partner with him as we usher UCLA Football into an exciting new era.”
