The Red Raiders had shut out Kansas through the first three quarters. After putting up 140 yards of offense through that span, the Jayhawks came alive in the final frame.

Kansas amassed 204 yards of offense in the fourth quarter and roared back from a 13-0 deficit. Jayhawks running back Devin Neal broke open Kansas’ scoring with a 60-yard dash to score and make it 13-7. 

Kansas made a crucial third and 7 stop to regain possession, and after an 11-play, 71-yard drive Jayhawks kicker Seth Keller hit a 24-yard field goal with 4:42 left to play. 

After another scoreless possession for Texas Tech resulting in a punt, the Jayhawks converted four first downs including a key 17-yard reception by receiver Quentin Skinner on third and 2. 

The Jayhawks marched to Texas Tech’s 3-yard line, and Keller made another field goal from 22 yards out to tie the game at 13 apiece with 25 seconds left. 

Texas Tech only needed three plays to set itself up in field goal position after quarterback Behren Morton connected on passes of 16, 14 and 33 yards to move to the Jayhawks 12-yard line. 

Garcia kicked in the game-winning field goal, and the win sealed Texas Tech’s second-straight victory. 

Kansas outgained Texas Tech 344 yards to 312. Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean saw limited action and went 1-of-4 while Cole Ballard went 9-of-20 for 124 yards.

Neal finished with 137 rushing yards. 

Morton had a 76% completion with 176 yards and an interception. Running back Tahj Brooks had 133 rushing yards and a touchdown.

After Kansas upset No. 6 Oklahoma 38-33 on Saturday afternoon, Bean spoke in front of his teammates in the locker room. The sixth-year quarterback said “it means everything” to earn the win “against that school in that fashion.” 

“I’ve been through so much,” Bean said. “First of all, I wanted to thank them because without them I wouldn’t be here and I think that’s the main thing is that I’m just proud to be in this situation.”

The win represents a point of culmination for Bean and the Jayhawks. From 2009-21, the program went 28-125 and missed the postseason. 

Under head coach Lance Leipold in his third year, Kansas is bowl eligible for the second-straight season. 

“From where I came and where this team has come, those tough days, those tough L’s are the reason that you live for days like this,” Bean said. 

Kansas knocked off Oklahoma using a valiant rushing effort, going for four touchdowns on the ground and 225 yards which were the most Oklahoma has given up in a game this season. 

The Jayhawks ran for at least 47 yards in all four quarters and had five rushes for more than 10 yards. They ran it in twice during the fourth quarter as running backs Daniel Hishaw and Devin Neal lifted Kansas to victory. 

“We got an excited locker room,” Leipold said. “For me, I’m just processing everything: the ups and downs, the emotion, how proud I am of this football team for so many reasons. So many today, but so many as we lost two of our last three against some good football teams and played an excellent team today, and to find a way to keep battling and come up with stops when we needed them and executing plays on top of that.”

Bean has done most of his work this season from the backup spot in the Kansas quarterback room. 

The Jayhawks expected Jalon Daniels to quarterback them this season, but back and shoulder injuries have kept him sidelined for some competition. Daniels has missed the past four games due to injury. 

But Bean has been the confident veteran leading the Jayhawks in Daniels’ absence. It’s something that means a lot to Bean, someone who has been part of college football for more than a half-decade and had opportunity to explore elsewhere. 

“He just kept fighting, and that’s all we can ask for him,” Leipold said. “And to see him make some plays like he did today, I thought it was really special.”

Kansas conjured something special on Saturday: their first top-10 win since 2008. 

After seven lead changes including five in the second half, Kansas clinched its first win over Oklahoma since 1997. 

“We got a lot of football to play, and now we’ve got to continue to take steps,” Leipold said. “And that’s the way I am. I’ll probably talk more about the things we didn’t do quite as clean as we want but at this moment, though, I’m so proud, so proud of them and happy for them.”

Jayhawks running back Daniel Hishaw had two rushing scores while running back Devin Neal and quarterback Jason Bean each had one. Kansas ran for 225 yards, the most that Oklahoma has allowed in a game this season.

Kansas entered the fourth quarter trailing 27-26. Hishaw ran in a 1-yard score to give the Jayhawks a brief 32-27 lead with 12:25 remaining. 

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel dashed for his third rushing touchdown of the day with 5:22 left on the clock. Gabriel’s three rushing touchdowns are a career high. 

Sooners defensive lineman Ethan Downs came up with an interception of Bean on the ensuing drive. The Jayhawks had completed a key fourth and four on the drive, and Oklahoma’s interception came at its own 49-yard line. 

Kansas forced a big three-and-out after Oklahoma couldn’t run for another first down. The Sooners punted, and the Jayhawks took over possession at their own 20-yard line with less than two minutes to go. 

Bean had passes of 17 and 37 yards to set the Jayhawks up in favorable position at the Sooners’ 9-yard line. Neal ran in the go-ahead score from nine yards out with 55 seconds left on the board. 

Oklahoma wasn’t out of the game, however, as Gabriel made several big completions of his own for 19 and 39 yards to put the Sooners on the doorstep of the red zone. 

But Kansas’ defense made the stops and sealed the win.

Bean finished with 218 passing yards, two interceptions, 62 rushing yards and a score. Neal had 112 rushing yards and Hishaw had 51. 

Gabriel had 167 passing yards and an interception. He had 64 yards on the ground while running back Tawee Walker had a game-high 146 rushing yards.
