For the third consecutive season, the Big Ten will play for the national championship. This time, the conference arrives not on the shoulders of its traditional powers, but through two programs that reflect its rapidly changing identity.

Indiana and Oregon — one a long‑suffering Midwestern underdog, the other a newly arrived West Coast contender — have reached the national semifinal together. Their parallel climbs ensure that the Big Ten’s logo will appear on the sport’s biggest stage once again, underscoring the league’s expanding reach and deepening competitive base.

Indiana’s Rise Reshapes Expectations

Indiana’s presence in the playoff marks one of the most significant breakthroughs in college football history. Long defined by near‑misses and incremental progress, the Hoosiers have finally broken through with a veteran roster and a system built on tempo, discipline, and opportunistic defense. Indiana’s offense features a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback in Fernando Mendoza.

They didn’t back into the bracket. They earned it with ranked wins, late‑game execution, and a season‑long ability to dictate style. Indiana’s run under Curt Cignetti signals a shift in the conference hierarchy: the middle of the league is no longer passive. It’s producing legitimate national contenders.

Oregon Delivers on the Promise of Expansion

Oregon entered the Big Ten with questions about travel, fit, and tradition. What was never in doubt was the Ducks’ competitive value. This season has validated that belief.

Oregon remains one of the nation’s most balanced teams, pairing its trademark offensive creativity led by quarterback Dante Moore with a defense capable of controlling games. Their playoff berth is less a surprise than a confirmation — the Ducks were added to strengthen the league’s national profile, and they’ve done exactly that. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has served notice that the Ducks will be a factor on the national scene for seasons to come.

By joining Indiana in The Peach Bowl, Oregon has helped guarantee the Big Ten another shot at the title, reinforcing the strategic logic behind the conference’s western expansion.

A Conference Built on Breadth, Not Just Brands

For decades, the Big Ten’s national hopes rose and fell with Ohio State and Michigan. Their rivalry shaped the league’s identity and its postseason expectations.

This year tells a different story.

Indiana and Oregon represent a conference no longer dependent on a single flagship. The Big Ten now spans four time zones and fields multiple programs capable of reaching the sport’s final weekend. Its strength is structural, not situational.

That’s how a league produces three straight national championship appearances. That’s how it sustains relevance in an era defined by realignment and rapid change.

A New Era, Already Taking Hold

Whether Indiana’s breakthrough continues or Oregon’s balance prevails, the Big Ten has already secured something meaningful: a place in the national title game and a clear signal that its competitive future is broader than ever.

The conference wanted to become the sport’s gravitational center. With Indiana and Oregon meeting on the playoff stage, that vision looks less like ambition and more like reality.

The Big Ten closed its regular season with a slate of rivalry games that carried both tradition and postseason weight. From the Big House to Bloomington, the weekend delivered decisive victories, emotional farewells, and clarity for the College Football Playoff picture.

Ohio State Stands Tall in Ann Arbor
The marquee matchup lived up to its billing, though only one side left satisfied. Ohio State controlled Michigan from start to finish, earning a 27–9 victory that cemented the Buckeyes’ place atop the conference and strengthened their case as the nation’s No. 1 team. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw for 233 yards, while running back Bo Jackson added 117 on the ground. Michigan’s offense sputtered, leaving the Wolverines to regroup ahead of bowl season. Ohio State heads to Indianapolis undefeated at 12-0, while Michigan finished 9-3 for the regular season and await their bowl game destination.

Trophy Games Deliver Tradition
Indiana kept the Old Oaken Bucket with a resounding 56–3 win over Purdue, powered by Fernando Mendoza’s 2 touchdowns passing and Roman Hemby’s 152 rushing yards. In Minneapolis, Minnesota claimed Paul Bunyan’s Axe by defeating Wisconsin 17–7, with Darius Taylor rushing for 100 yards and 1 touchdown to secure bragging rights. Illinois edged Northwestern 20–13 in the battle for the Land of Lincoln Trophy, thanks to Hayden Eligon II’s 99 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

The West Coast Teams Battled Intensely

Oregon traveled to Washington and defeated the Huskies, 26-14. Oregon wide receiver Malik Benson had a dynamic 64 yard touchdown reception that put the Ducks in the lead for good. USC hosted in-city rival UCLA and defeated the Bruins, 29-10. USC running back King Miller carried the ball 17 times for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns, as the Trojans broke the game open in the second half versus UCLA.

Penn State Survives Rutgers Shootout
In one of the weekend’s most entertaining contests, Penn State outlasted Rutgers 40–36. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis threw for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Scarlet Knights, while Kaytron Allen rushed for 226 and 1 touchdown, showcasing the Nittany Lions’ offensive balance. The win kept Penn State in the conversation for a bowl game, as the Nittany Lions finished 6-6.

Hawkeyes and Spartans Close Strong
Iowa rolled past Nebraska 40–16, highlighted by Emmett Johnson’s 217 rushing yards. Michigan State ended its season on a high note, defeating Maryland 38–28 and surviving Malik Washington’s staggering 459 passing yards and 3 touchdowns.

Looking Ahead
The weekend underscored the Big Ten’s blend of tradition and high stakes. Ohio State and Indiana will meet for The Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis the evening of December 6th (televised by Fox; 8pm ET kickoff). Oregon projects as a College Football Playoff participant, likely to host an initial playoff game the weekend of December 19th-December 20th. Michigan and USC (9-3), Iowa, Illinois, and Washington (8-4), Minnesota and Nebraska (7-5), and Northwestern and Penn State (6-6) all will find out their respective bowl game destinations the afternoon of December 7th.

As for UCLA (6-6), Rutgers (5-7), Maryland, Michigan State, and Wisconsin (4-8), and Purdue (2-9), a long offseason of recruiting and retooling awaits. Keep your eyes and ears open for any possible coaching changes that may be taking place at any of these respective institutions.

In the Big Ten, November doesn’t whisper—it howls. It’s the month when playoff dreams teeter on the edge of a missed tackle, a fourth-down gamble, or a kicker’s nerve. Week 11 delivered a slate of games that didn’t just fill the scoreboard—they carved storylines into the season’s spine. Across eight matchups, the margins were thin, the stakes high, and the narratives unforgettable.

Friday Night Lights: USC 38, Northwestern 17
At the Coliseum, USC’s win looked routine on paper—but for three quarters, Northwestern made the Trojans earn every yard. Trailing just 24–17 entering the fourth, the Wildcats ran out of gas as King Miller’s 129 rushing yards and a late touchdown sealed the deal. For USC, it was a lesson in patience. For Northwestern, a reminder that grit doesn’t always yield glory. Northwestern is still seeking its 6th victory of the season for bowl eligibility, while USC is at 7-2 and still in The College Football Playoff hunt.

Saturday Showdowns

Indiana 27, Penn State 24
History was made in Happy Valley. Indiana, winless in State College for over a century, stunned the Nittany Lions with a last-minute touchdown from Fernando Mendoza to Omar Cooper Jr. With 36 seconds left, the Hoosiers didn’t just win—they rewrote their program’s narrative. Penn State, once a playoff hopeful, now faces a distinct possibility of sitting at home for the holidays, as the Nittany Lions fell to 3-6 on the season.

Ohio State 34, Purdue 10
The Buckeyes remain unblemished, but not untested. Julian Sayin’s four-touchdown performance masked a sluggish second half in which Purdue’s defense held firm. The Boilermakers couldn’t capitalize offensively, but they exposed cracks in Ohio State’s armor—cracks that could widen under postseason pressure. Ohio State remains unbeaten as the nation’s top team, while Purdue is still seeking their first Big Ten win for 2025 and are 2-8 overall.

Rutgers 35, Maryland 20
In Piscataway, Rutgers turned a 14–14 halftime tie into a second-half statement. The Scarlet Knights leaned on their ground game with Antwan Raymond (41 carries for 240 yards and 1 touchdown) and defensive adjustments to pull away, while Maryland’s offense sputtered in the second half with only 83 yards. It was a win that spoke less about dominance and more about discipline. Rutgers is 5-5, clinging to hopes for a bowl game, while Maryland fell to 4-5 and have lost five straight games.

Oregon 18, Iowa 16
At Kinnick Stadium, the weather was bleak and the stakes were high. Oregon’s playoff hopes hung in the balance until Atticus Sappington’s 39-yard field goal split the uprights in the final seconds. Iowa’s defense had been heroic, but Dante Moore’s late-game poise proved decisive. This was Big Ten football at its most elemental: muddy, methodical, and merciless. Oregon is now at 8-1, while Iowa fell to 6-3 with their hopes for a possible College Football Playoff berth a longshot at best.

Wisconsin 13, Washington 10
The upset of the weekend came in Madison, where Wisconsin’s defense suffocated No. 23 Washington. A fourth-quarter field goal proved the difference, but the real story was the Badgers’ ability to dictate tempo and deny big plays. November is no place for finesse—and Wisconsin proved it. Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell can now savor his first Big Ten win of the 2025 season, while Washington fell to 6-3 for the season.

Nebraska 28, UCLA 21
In Pasadena, Nebraska was led by quarterback TJ Lateef in an impressive homecoming in his first start. The Bruins battled the Cornhuskers throughout, but had no answers for a dynamic performance by Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson, who had 28 carries for 129 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground, while adding 3 receptions for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns that proved to be the difference.

Final Whistle: What Week 11 Taught Us

This weekend wasn’t about style points—it was about survival. It reminded us that in the Big Ten, November is a proving ground. It’s where reputations are tested, contenders are clarified, and every possession carries weight. The scoreboard tells one story. The margins tell another.

And in those margins—of meaning, of motion, of momentum—this season’s legacy is being written.

Ohio State and Indiana still sit atop the conference standings undefeated, with Michigan, Oregon, and USC one game behind with one conference loss. Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, and Minnesota all had byes this weekend. Michigan State, Penn State, and Purdue are all seeking their first Big Ten wins of the 2025 season.

The final Saturday of October delivered an entertaining slate of Big Ten football, with rivalry heat, playoff pressure, and postseason dreams on the line. As the conference barrels toward November, contenders are separating from the pack — and a few surprise teams are making noise.

Bruins Were Broken

The No. 2 Hoosiers made a statement in Bloomington, dismantling UCLA with a relentless offensive attack, 56-6. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for 3 touchdowns, and the defense held the Bruins to under 200 total yards. Indiana’s playoff hopes are alive and well — and their margin of victory could prove crucial in CFP rankings. Indiana remains undefeated at 8-0 and tied for The Big Ten conference lead, while UCLA lost its first game after a three game winning streak, leaving the Bruins at 3-5 overall, and 3-2 in The Big Ten.

Huskers Are Bowl Bound

Nebraska nearly squandered a 15 point lead at home versus Northwestern, but prevailed 28-21. The win improved Nebraska’s record to 6-2, so the Cornhuskers know they will be in a bowl game for the second straight season. Nebraska sits at 3-2 in Big Ten play, while Northwestern fell to 5-3 overall, and also have a 3-2 record in The Big Ten.

Boo Hoo For The Boilers

Rutgers snapped a four game losing streak by earning its first Big Ten win of the 2025 season by defeating Purdue, 27-24. Purdue lost in the last minute, as Boilermakers QB Ryan Browne caught his own deflected pass, then fumbled it at the Purdue 30 yard line. Rutgers improved to 4-4 overall, and 1-4 in The Big Ten. Purdue is now 2-6 for the season, and still looking for their first Big Ten win of 2025, with an 0-5 conference record.

Floyd Of Rosedale Or Routsdale?

Iowa dominated Minnesota, 41-3, allowing the Hawkeyes to retain the coveted Floyd Of Rosedale trophy. Iowa is now 6-2 overall, and 4-1 in The Big Ten. The Hawkeyes are still in the thick of it for a Big Ten championship, as well as a possible College Football Playoff berth. Minnesota is now 5-3 overall, and 3-2 in The Big Ten. The Golden Gophers may be on the outside looking in at The College Football Playoff.

Saturday Was Not Alright For The Fighting Illini

Washington did not play sluggishly in the first half versus the visiting Fighting Illini, as the Huskies jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter behind a couple of touchdown receptions by Dezmen Roebuck, and won 42-25. Washington improved to 6-2 overall, with a 3-2 conference record. The Huskies may be able to get to The College Football Playoff if they win the remaining games on their schedule. Illinois is now 5-3 for the season, and 2-3 in Big Ten play. A College Football Playoff berth seems unlikely at this point.

The Ducks Were Not Too Dominant Versus Wisconsin

Oregon was expected to crush the visiting Wisconsin Badgers, and eventually won 21-7. Oregon only held a 7-0 lead over Wisconsin at the half, sparking some confusion by Oregon fans and possible hope by Wisconsin fans. The Badgers avoided a shutout as Wisconsin quarterback Hunter Simmons threw a 2 yard touchdown pass to Lance Mason late in the 4th quarter. Oregon improved to 7-1 overall, with a 4-1 Big Ten record. Wisconsin played better than in their previous two games, but are 2-6 for the season and still looking for their first 2025 Big Ten win as they are now 0-5 in conference play.

The Paul Bunyan Trophy Is Still Residing In Ann Arbor

The Wolverines never trailed in this game, jumping out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, before defeating the Michigan State Spartans, 31-20. This marked the fourth straight win by Michigan over Michigan State in this rivalry game, and allowed the Wolverines to hold onto the coveted Paul Bunyan Trophy for at least another year. The Wolverines’ rushing attack led by Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall combined for over 250 yards on the ground and 3 touchdowns. Michigan improved to 6-2 on the season, with a 4-1 Big Ten record. Michigan State is now 3-5, and at 0-5 within conference play.

Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, and USC all had bye weeks. Heading into the first weekend of November, Ohio State and Indiana are the only teams within The Big Ten that are undefeated. Iowa, Michigan, Oregon, and USC all have only one conference loss. Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin are seeking their first Big Ten win for the 2025 season.

October 11th was another weekend of tight games that are helping to define The Big Ten conference race, but a surprising loss resulted in the biggest news for one of college football’s blue blood programs.

Are Ohio State And Indiana On A Collision Course For December 6th?

Ohio State, ranked No. 1, continued its march toward the College Football Playoff with a 34–16 win over No. 17 Illinois in Champaign. Despite being outgained in total yardage, the Buckeyes capitalized on three Illini turnovers, converting each into touchdowns. Their defense bent but never broke, and quarterback Julian Sayin had an efficient, if not gaudy, day running the offense.

Meanwhile, No. 7 Indiana stunned No. 2 Oregon 30–20 in Eugene, handing the Ducks their first Big Ten loss since joining the conference. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza led the Hoosiers with 215 passing yards and a touchdown, while the defense sealed the win with two fourth-quarter interceptions. Head coach Curt Cignetti’s squad is now poised for its highest ranking in decades, and with no regular-season matchup against Ohio State, a Big Ten Championship showdown between the two is increasingly likely.

Let’s Get Physical

In Los Angeles, USC made a statement by defeating No. 15 Michigan 31–13. Jayden Maiava threw for 265 yards and King Miller added 158 rushing yards, overwhelming a Wolverines team led by freshman phenom Bryce Underwood. Michigan’s offense showed flashes, including a 69-yard touchdown to Andrew Marsh, but couldn’t close the gap late.

“Been To The Edge…”

Nebraska edged Maryland 34–31 in a back-and-forth contest at SECU Stadium, while Minnesota held off Purdue 27–20 at home. Adding insult to injury for Maryland and Purdue is how both teams held the lead in their respective games, but were unable to maintain them.

Washington = The Rodney Dangerfield Of College Football

Washington defeated Rutgers 38–19 on Friday night, with a strong second-half surge. Just as Washington did versus Maryland on October 4th, the Huskies spotted the Scarlet Knights the early lead, before taking the lead in the second half. With Washington going on the road to face Michigan on October 18th, the Huskies will need to avoid a sluggish start. Despite a 5-1 record, Washington remains unranked.

Something Is A ‘Bruin’

Any thoughts that the UCLA win over Penn State on October 4th was a blip on the college football radar screen were quickly answered as the Bruins went to East Lansing and dominated Michigan State, 38-13. UCLA is now 2-4 on the season, and 2-1 in conference play. Michigan State sits at 3-3 on the season, and is 0-3 in Big Ten play.

Penn State Pulls The Plug

After the shocking loss at UCLA, the conventional wisdom was that Penn State would regroup at home versus Northwestern. The Wildcats had other ideas, and pulled off a shocking 22-21 win at Penn State. Penn State was a three touchdown favorite.

Penn State, despite the hefty buyout figure, decided that the James Franklin era had run its course, and relieved the coach of his duties on October 12th. Rumors and speculation will now run rampant on who the next Nittany Lions head coach will be for the remainder of the season.

Badgers Are Looking Bleak

Iowa went into Camp Randall Stadium and had no problem handling Wisconsin, shutting the Badgers out to a score of 37-0. Luke Fickell seemed shellshocked after the loss, and has to regroup for a visit from Ohio State on October 18th. Iowa is now 4-2 on the year, and 2-1 in The Big Ten. Wisconsin sits at 2-4, with an 0-3 record within The Big Ten. Wisconsin, Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan State, and Penn State are all seeking their first Big Ten win this season.
