The 2024 NFL Draft continued Friday with the second and third rounds picking through No. 100 overall. It began with wide receivers Keon Coleman of Florida State and Georgia’s Ladd McConkey going back to back at Nos. 33-34 to the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively, and ended with Rice’s Luke McCaffrey being picked by the Washington Commanders. No quarterbacks were selected after six went in the first round on Thursday.

More than 150,000 fans attended the draft on Thursday, and all 32 picks are listed in First Round Live Reaction: 2024 NFL Draft.

Michigan men go back-to-back in second round; Jim Harbaugh takes Los Angeles’ first Wolverine in third

Defending national champion Michigan sent an NFL Scouting Combine-record 18 participants to Indianapolis earlier this offseason.

Michigan saw six players drafted in the second and third rounds, bringing its total to seven so far this draft after quarterback J.J. McCarthy went No. 10 overall to the Minnesota Vikings.

Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins was the second Wolverine picked in the draft when he went No. 49 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round. He began back-to-back selections of former Michigan players as cornerback Mike Sainristil went next at No. 50 overall.

New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh drafted his first former Wolverine when he chose linebacker Junior Colson in the third round at No. 69 overall.

The crosstown rival Los Angeles Rams selected former Michigan running back Blake Corum at No. 83 overall in the third round. He started a string of three-straight Wolverines drafted when wide receiver Roman Wilson went No. 84 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers and guard Zak Zinter was picked No. 85 overall by the Cleveland Browns.

Harbaugh broke out in song among Chargers personnel during the draft in a video posted on X.

Kirby Smart shouts out drafted Bulldogs

Georgia continued its streak of at least six Bulldogs picked in every draft since 2018.

Four more of head coach Kirby Smart’s former players heard their names called in Detroit: McConkey and defensive backs Kamari Lassiter, Javon Bullard and Tykee Smith.

Smart shouted each of the four Bulldog draftees on Friday, as he did Thursday for former tight end Brock Bowers and tackle Amarius Mims.

The NFL announced Tuesday that 321 players were invited to the Combine taking place Feb. 26-March 4.

Seventy-nine teams will be represented at the Combine this year.

Michigan had a Combine-record 18 players invited this year. Among the Wolverines who were invited include quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and defensive lineman Kris Jenkins.

Heisman Trophy-winning LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will be among the gunslingers taking part in drills. Fellow Heisman finalists Marvin Harrison Jr., Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. will also be in attendance at the Combine, as well as 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams.

Throughout the game Saturday, the Tigers dropped back in man coverage with single matchups between receivers and defensive backs, and it led to 289 passing yards from Travis, who took exception to the defense after throwing a game-winning touchdown 24 yards to Keon Coleman. 

“They were disrespecting me a little bit. I don’t think they believed that I can make those throws, and I’m glad it ended like that. So glad it ended like that,” Travis said. “It kind of just shows the journey and all the ups and downs and, like a roller coaster, man, and I overcame it all and this football team overcame it all, and I’m so grateful for a moment like that.”

Travis’ up and down journey can show in last week’s game, and to others, it can begin when he first stepped foot on a college football field at Louisville in 2018. 

Travis spent a year with the Cardinals and appeared in three games before deciding to transfer to his dream destination at Florida State. A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, the transfer made a perfect fit. 

Across the next four seasons, Travis would build a career that broke Florida State program records, and it hasn’t come easily. In came Mike Norvell as head coach prior to the 2020 season, and with him came a new system and offensive ideas. 

Saturday’s 31-24 overtime win in Death Valley was a culmination of work that both Travis and Florida State attained over time, and it marked the Seminoles’ first win over Clemson since 2014. 

“The joy is really special because we just love to see each other succeed, and that’s the main thing,” Travis said. “We don’t have selfish people on this football team and I think that’s what makes us really special. We have wide receivers that don’t get the ball all the time but they’re out there blocking their butts off no matter what, never hanging their head. Never come to yell at me, none of that type of stuff. It just shows the brotherhood of this football team.”

Travis completed 57% of his passes against the Tigers, adding on two touchdown passes and the one that mattered most on his first pass attempt in overtime. 

Coleman totaled 86 receiving yards across five catches, and two went for touchdowns. 

“If they’re not doubling us, they can’t cover us so we might as well just keep throwing the ball,” Coleman said. “(Travis) trusted that and did what he does best and put it in the right spot.” 

Florida State’s season has been widely successful thus far. The Seminoles notched a top-10 victory in Week 1 defeating then-No. 5 LSU 45-24. 

The Seminoles struggled closing out their 31-29 win over Boston College a week ago. They allowed 19 unanswered points to end the game, and Travis exited with an apparent shoulder injury. 

Travis would re-enter the game Sept. 16, and his shoulder has appeared healthy and he played well in the game against Clemson. 

“We have practice (Sunday) so we’re going to get back to work (Sunday),” Travis said. “There’s no days off here. No matter what if we have an off day or not. We have to take the opportunity to watch film, be in the treatment room, working out, things like that.” 

Travis has been with the Florida State program over the past several years during which it had three wins in 2020, five wins in 2021 and then its 10-3 season last year which marked the Seminoles’ first 10-win season since 2016. 

Norvell said he loves coaching Travis, and he knows how much the quarterback means to the Florida State program. 

“He is an absolute winner. That’s who he is,” Norvell said. “Coming off a game where he had a little bit of an injury and some challenges that he had to work through, and he stood up and stood up in the moment. And I’m so proud of him for who he is.”

The Seminoles will have three-consecutive home games coming up over the next three weeks, and it presents an opportunity for Florida State to add to its 4-0 record. 

But for now, Saturday’s win proved more than Flroida State’s first win over the Tigers in nine years and first on the road in 10. 

“Honestly, man, I don’t remember. I’m so excited, so happy,” Travis said. “I had tears coming down my face in the locker room, man, because just the journey how far I’ve come as a man and as a player, so I’m grateful. I mean, that was a really special moment.”

The No. 4 Seminoles moved to 4-0 and earned their 10^th-consecutive victory after quarterback Jordan Travis found receiver Keon Coleman on a 24-yard touchdown pass on the second play of overtime to go up 31-24.

The Tigers’ final drive ended with more to be desired. Running back Will Shipley gained nine yards on a first down rush, then Florida State finished by forcing an incompletion on fourth and 1 to win the game. 

Clemson held a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter. 

Florida State redshirt senior linebacker Kalen DeLoach sacked Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik in open field and scooped the football for a 56-yard fumble return touchdown. The score tied the game at 24 points apiece with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

Both teams kept one another from scoring throughout the fourth quarter, and the Tigers reached field goal range with less than three minutes remaining. 

Clemson kicker Jonathan Weitz missed a possible go-ahead field goal from 29 yards out with 1:45 left on the clock, giving Florida State possession back from its own 20-yard line. 

Driving down the field off the arm of Travis, who converted two first downs on throws of 25 and 15 yards, the Seminoles faced a fourth and 10 with 12 seconds left. 

Travis’ throw intended for Coleman tipped off the hands of Coleman as he leapt between two Tigers defensive backs inside Clemson’s 20-yard line — turning the football back over to Clemson. 

Clemson couldn’t get one final play off in time in regulation, and the two teams entered overtime tied at 24.

Travis finished with 289 passing yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Johnny Wilson had a game-high 94 yards and Coleman tallied 86. 

Klubnik totaled 283 passing yards and added a touchdown. He finished with a 66% completion and added a rushing touchdown.
