October 4th’s slate of games within The Big Ten was rife with stunning upsets, dominant performances, and playoff implications rippling across the conference. Here’s how it all unfolded:

Ohio State Crushes Minnesota, Stays No. 1

The Buckeyes showed no mercy at home in Columbus, dismantling Minnesota 42–3 behind a balanced offensive attack and suffocating defense. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw for multiple touchdowns, including two to standout receiver Jeremiah Smith, while running backs CJ Donaldson and Bo Jackson each found the end zone. Ohio State improved to 5–0 and solidified its grip on the top spot nationally.

UCLA Shocks No. 6 Penn State in Pasadena

In one of the most stunning results of the season, previously winless UCLA stunned Penn State 42–37 at the Rose Bowl. Tennessee transfer Nico Iamaleava accounted for five touchdowns and 294 total yards, carving up a Nittany Lions defense that had been elite through September. Despite a late rally, Penn State fell to 3–2, with fans calling for changes after another high-profile collapse.

Michigan Handles Wisconsin Behind Haynes’ Heroics

No. 20 Michigan rolled past Wisconsin 24–10 in Ann Arbor, thanks to 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Justice Haynes. The Wolverines overcame an early deficit and dominated the second half, improving to 4–1. Bryce Underwood added a 29-yard touchdown pass to Donaven McCulley, while the defense sacked Wisconsin’s third-string quarterback Hunter Simmons twice and forced a key interception.

Illinois Offense Explodes in Win Over Purdue

No. 22 Illinois lit up the scoreboard in West Lafayette, dropping 43 points on Purdue in a 43–27 road win. The Fighting Illini moved to 5–1, showcasing their offensive depth versus a scrappy Boilermakers defense.

Washington Rallies to Hand Maryland First Loss

Maryland led 20–3 entering the fourth quarter, but Washington stormed back with 21 unanswered points to steal a 24–20 win. The Terrapins suffered their first loss of the season, while Washington moved to 4-1 with a gritty road victory.

Nebraska Bounces Back, Tops Michigan State

After a tough loss to Michigan two weeks prior, Nebraska rebounded with a 38–27 win over Michigan State in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers leaned on their ground game led by Emmett Johnson and timely defense to improve to 4–2.

Northwestern Crushes UL Monroe

In non-conference action, Northwestern handled UL Monroe 42-7 to move to 3–2, showing resilience after a rocky start to the season. Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone had a strong game, with 262 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.

The NCAA has responded to the lawsuit filed in Tennessee and Virginia that challenges the use of NIL recruiting rules.

According to Teresa M. Walker of The. Associated Press, the NCAA released a 25-page response that “asks a judge to deny both motions” of a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction sought by Tennessee and Virginia.

The NCAA “says the states of Tennessee and Virginia threaten to throw college sports into “disarray” if granted the temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction,” according to the AP.

“There is no reason to upend this process, invite chaos on a moment’s notice, and transform college sports into an environment where players and schools match up based primarily on the dollars that can change hands,” the NCAA stated via the AP.

On Wednesday, the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia filed an antitrust lawsuit “that challenged its ban on the use of name, image and likeness compensation in the recruitment of college athletes,” according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

The lawsuit comes in response to an NCAA investigation into Tennessee over NIL violations, and there is potential for “multiple” Level 1 and Level 2 violations, according to Thamel.

The NIL deal receiving most scrutiny is Tennessee’s recruitment of former five-star recruit and quarterback Nico Iamaleava and his NIL contract with the primarily Volunteers collective Spyre Sports Group.

A judge will hear a request by the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia for a preliminary injunction “that would put on hold NCAA rules banning recruiting inducements and pay-for-play” on Feb. 13, according to the AP.

Tennessee and Virginia “have until Sunday night to respond to the NCAA’s request to deny the requests for the temporary restraining order and injunction,” according to the AP.

The NCAA has investigated the Tennessee program for violations of the name, image and likeness policy, and in turn, a lawsuit has reportedly been filed in Tennessee and Virginia challenging the use of NIL recruiting rules.

On Monday, there were reports of an NCAA investigation surrounding Tennessee for NIL violations, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

READ: Reports: Auburn hires D.J. Durkin as defensive coordinator

According to Thamel, “the scope and breadth of the current allegations, according to sources, include the potential for the enforcement staff to charge multiple Level 1 and Level 2 violations,” and involves Tennessee’s primary collective Spyre Sports Group.

The “attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA on Wednesday that challenged its ban on the use of name, image and likeness compensation in the recruitment of college athletes, and in response to the association’s investigation of the University of Tennessee,” according to Thamel.

According to Ralph D. Russo and Teresa M. Walker of The Associated Press, the lawsuit pertains to the use of NIL and recruiting inducements and claims the NCAA is “enforcing rules that unfairly restrict how athletes can commercially use their name, image and likeness at a critical juncture in the recruiting calendar.”

The NCAA issued a penalty to Florida State’s program Jan.12 over “an impermissible recruiting contact between a transfer prospect and a booster,” according to the AP.

READ: Reports: Former Arizona State DL B.J. Green transfers to Colorado

In this case, “Tennessee’s recruitment of five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava from California and his NIL contract with Spyre is among the deals receiving scrutiny from the NCAA,” according to the AP.

According to Ryan Callahan of GoVols part of the 247 Sports network, attorney Tom Mars released a statement Tuesday that said Iamaleava “signed a deal with Spyre independent of his decision to play for the Vols” and that it “had nothing to do” with Tennessee or another team.

The NCAA released a statement “related to the Tennessee case and lawsuit,” according to Chris Vannini of The Athletic.

“While the NCAA generally does not comment on specific infractions cases, it is important to remember that NCAA member schools and conferences not only make the rules but routinely call for greater enforcement of those rules and holding violators accountable,” the NCAA stated via The Athletic. “In recent years, this has been especially true as it relates to establishing and enforcing a consistent set of national rules intended to manage the name, image and likeness environment. This legal action would exacerbate what our members themselves have frequently described as a ‘wild west’ atmosphere, further tilting competitive imbalance among schools in neighboring states, and diminishing protections for student-athletes from potential exploitation. The NCAA remains firmly committed to protecting and expanding student-athletes’ NIL rights and opportunities. However, our membership has steadfastly supported the prohibition on impermissible recruiting contacts, booster involvement in recruiting prospects and the use of NIL offers as recruiting inducements.”

Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman sent a letter to the NCAA on Monday stating her frustrations with its “lack of leadership and clear rules regarding NIL” and the governing body of the NCAA itself, according to Bowman of 247 Sports.

The NCAA has trodden murky waters in the NIL era since it began in July 2021. Many leaders around college athletics have clamored for more regulation, enforcement and clarity regarding the topic.

READ: Reports: Iowa to hire Tim Lester as offensive coordinator

It appears now the NCAA is involved in another lawsuit regarding NIL, and it could become difficult.

Attorney General of Virginia Jason Miyares posted Wednesday on X stating “The NCAA’s NIL-recruiting ban violates federal antitrust law, thwarts the free market, and unfairly limits student-athletes,” and that “We’re taking them to court.”
