The February 4 signing period closed with a clear message: The Big Ten has become a recruiting superpower. With its expanded footprint and recent national success, the conference landed three of the top five classes in the country and showed unprecedented depth from top to bottom.

The New Standard Setters

USC, Oregon, and Ohio State finished 1–3–4 nationally, giving the Big Ten a recruiting triumvirate that rivals anything the SEC has assembled. Alabama at number two was what prevented The Big Ten from claiming the top three spots in recruiting rankings by 247sports.com.

USC claimed the nation’s No. 1 class with elite skill talent and unmatched volume.

Oregon posted the highest average player rating in the conference.

Ohio State delivered another balanced, star‑heavy haul built for playoff contention.

Michigan and Washington Hold Strong

Both programs secured top fifteen national finishes, reinforcing the Big Ten’s growing concentration of power. Michigan leaned on quality over quantity, while Washington’s class signaled it’s ready to compete immediately in its new league.

A Deeper Middle Tier

Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, and Rutgers all landed classes that would have been top‑25 nationally a decade ago. The conference’s middle is no longer a soft spot—it’s a strength.

Small Classes, Big Upside

Nebraska and Maryland signed fewer players but posted strong average ratings, suggesting high‑end talent even without volume. Michigan State and UCLA sit in the developmental tier but added foundational pieces.

What It Means

The Big Ten’s 2026 haul reflects a conference transformed. The addition of West Coast powers didn’t just expand geography—it elevated the league’s recruiting ceiling. With five top‑five classes and competitive depth across nearly every program, the Big Ten enters the next era not as a challenger, but as a co‑architect of the national landscape.

Today on The Daily Huddle, Garrett Searight discusses the one thing Colorado fans may not want to confront about the 2023 season.

Also, Jim Harbaugh had some strong statements about the future of the NCAA…which is curious timing considering his current situation with the organization. But he’s poking the bear because he doesn’t think it has any teeth.

Finally, Ohio State has named a starting QB. No one is surprised by the decision, but if the coaching staff was split on who it should be, were the right people being asked for their opinions?

Ohio State athletic director and senior vice president Gene Smith announced on Wednesday he will retire in July 2024.

The 19th-year Buckeyes athletics director who is a native of Cleveland first arrived at Ohio State in April 2005. He’s spent nearly two decades guiding the Buckeyes and being a leading voice in the Big Ten Conference.

“I want to thank the leadership of The Ohio State University during my tenure for providing me the opportunity to serve as Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletic Director for the past 18 years,” Smith stated in a release.

Gene Smith, Athletic Director at The Ohio State University, will retire in July 2024. Thank you for all you've done

Smith has spent the past 18 years at Ohio State leading one of the largest and most successful and outstanding athletic programs in the country. pic.twitter.com/g5sLxrDxlc
— Ohio State Buckeyes (@OhioStAthletics) August 9, 2023

Smith has also served as athletic director at Eastern Michigan, Iowa State and Arizona State. He cited spending more time with family among his reasons for his impending retirement.

Some of Smith’s accomplishments include the creation of the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute which includes Bucks Go Pro programs and internships for Buckeye student-athletes. Ohio State has also achieved 369 individual and 115 team conference championships during Smith’s tenure.

Smith and his colleagues at Ohio State’s development team since 2005 have also raised more than $930 million, which represent over 77% of all funds raised for Ohio State athletics all-time, according to a release.

Smith also currently serves on the NCAA NIL Working Group, as student-athletes received the right to profit from their name, image and likeness during his tenure in July 2021. He also served on the College Football Playoff Committee from 2017-20.

Ohio State will see a change atop its athletics department on the cusp of the Big Ten expanding from 14 to 18 teams through the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.

Smith’s retirement will also come on the heels of a historic media rights agreement made by the Big Ten in August 2022.

Among a number of changes since Smith took the position at Ohio State, Smith wants to make sure the next athletic director is ready for the current, ever-changing landscape of college athletics.

“I have always believed that a leader seeks to be the right person at the right time in the life of the institution,” Smith stated in a release. “I believe that July 2024 is the right time to welcome new leadership to build upon what we have achieved and continue to build upon the great tradition of excellence in athletics and business advancement at Ohio State.”
