Notre Dame held off a vigorous challenge from both Ohio State and USC to land four-star linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa out of Bellflower (Calif.) on Sunday evening.

The addition of the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder gives the Fighting Irish their 3rd linebacker in the class of 2024 joining Bryce Young and Bodie Kahoun.

During Viliamu-Asa’s online announcement he stated that he wanted to go to a place that would have the academics along with the player development and ultimately, he felt that being part of Marcus Freeman’s program was the best of all worlds as he spurned the hometown team in USC and the presumed longtime favorite of Ohio State.

KVA shut everything down a week prior to his decision and went on a prayer retreat to look for guidance on who to ultimately select.

This commitment gives the Fighting Irish one of their highest rated defensive recruits in close to a decade.

With three linebackers in the class ,it would be pretty safe to say that the Irish are done at the position but you just never know in modern recruiting until the ink is dry on the letter of intent.

Notre Dame is in the top-10 of many of the national team recruiting rankings, but with 22 commits in the class of 2024, will that stick as many teams have yet to fill out their classes?

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks picked-up a major commit last week with the pledge of Long Beach (Calif.) linebacker Dylan Williams. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder picked the Ducks over finalists that included Michigan State, Miami (Fla.), UCLA and Washington.

Williams is a four-star recruit in the class of 2024 and at one point was a commitment to USC before deciding to step back and re-examine things.

Southern Cal’s loss is Oregon’s gain as the Ducks continue to recruit the state of California at a high level. Will that be something that will continue or even increase once the Trojans and Bruins both move to the Big Ten?

The Ducks now have 19 commits in the class of 2024 with Williams joining Kingston Lopa at the linebacker position in this current class.

Oregon further strengthens its position in the top-10 of the national team recruiting rankings with the addition of Williams. It only trails USC in Pac-12 recruiting with Stanford several spots below with its 28 commits in the current class.

Penn State added an in-state four star on Sunday with the addition of Mylachi Williams, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound defensive end. The Monsignor Bonner product out of Pennsylvania marks the 22nd commitment to the class of 2024 for James Franklin and his Nittany Lions as Penn State looks to bolster its ranks.

Williams was in high demand as several Power Five teams had identified him as a definite need but Penn State ended up winning out over Syracuse, Pitt and many others.

Eight of 22 commits for Penn State are out of their home state and the Nittany Lions have really been able to focus within the region with the vast majority of the class coming from the Midwest or Northeast.

Williams joins Xavier Gilliam and DeAndre Cook in a three-man defensive end class to this point.

Penn State was one of the first schools in on Williams and that was something that mattered in the process with Franklin and his staff seeing the potential in Williams before others may have.

At 215 pounds, it is expected that Williams will need to bulk up some for the rigors of playing weekly in the Big Ten Conference, but the Nittany Lions don’t want to do anything to turn down the explosiveness that Williams shows on tape. There will need to be some sort of balance when the Penn State strength and conditioning staff finally have a chance to work directly with the new commit.

Williams is considered to be the 19th best player in the state according to 247Sports. To this point, Penn State has landed commits from eight of the top-20 including four of the top five including athlete Quinton Martin.

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs continue to add to their No. 1 ranked national recruiting class for 2024 with the addition of humongous offensive lineman Nyier Daniels. The 6-foot-8, 370-pounder picked the Bulldogs over more than a dozen other national offers.

Daniels hails from Oradell (N.J.), not exactly a hotbed of UGA recruiting through the years but it didn’t matter when the back-to-back national champions came calling.

UGA has had some big commits in the past, but Daniels may be the biggest in terms of his sheer physical size. The Bulldogs have a pair of fellow 6-foot-8 linemen in the class with Michael Uini and Marcus Harrison, but Daniels may have 40-plus pounds on each of them, if not more.

Daniels is not the only player from the Garden State in this class as he joins defensive tackle Jordan Thomas out of Ramsey (N.J.) who committed to UGA a little bit less than a month ago.

Georgia is now up to 25 commits in its class and the class will certainly continue to grow but the Bulldogs seem to be stocked up on the offensive line with five in the class, but never say never to a sixth as Marques Easley still has a decision to make and the Bulldogs appear to be favorites in that recruitment as well.

Southern Cal under Lincoln Riley has been synonymous with offense as of late, but the defensive recruiting has been right there. On Saturday the Trojans landed three-star defensive tackle Deyvid Palepale out of Landsville (Pa.).

The Trojans beat out a pair of Big Ten schools in both Penn State and Michigan. Palepale will have a chance to go against both of those teams later in his career as USC is set to join the Big Ten with the start of the 2024 season, his freshman year.

USC’s defense is still considered a bit of a weakness of the team, something that likely kept USC out of the College Football Playoff last season in a pair of losses to Utah along the way.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder held close to two-dozen offers from across the nation before really narrowing it down to USC. Many experts felt that the draw to stay close to home would be too strong and have him land at Penn State but apparently distance was not a factor as he is crossing the country to attend USC.

Southern Cal’s class now hits the mark of 19 players for the class of 2024 and Palepale joins Kameryn Fountain as the only two members of the defensive line to this point, but that number should go up before the first National Signing Day arrives in December.

The reach of Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies reaches long and far. On Saturday it reached all the way into the Garden State of New Jersey as class of 2024 wide receiver Jaylan Hornsby committed to the Aggies.

Hornsby is a native of Atco (N.J.) and checks in at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds and attends Winslow Township school.

The new Aggie commit was closing in on 20 offers before picking A&M over Penn State and a host of other offers that included Notre Dame, Oregon, Rutgers and Michigan to name a few.

A big assist goes to Aggies’ defensive tackles coach Elijah Robinson, who has been cleaning up in his home state, regardless of position.

The Aggies have been on a recruiting hot streak, closing in on 10 commits over the past two weeks.

Hornsby joins a class that already has a pair of receivers in Debron Gatling and Dre’ion Miller. All three receivers are considered four-stars and give the Aggies some much needed boost at the wideout position, especially with all three receivers measuring in at 6-foot-1 or taller.

Overall, Texas A&M has 15 commits in its class and the class is inching towards the top-10 in many team recruiting rankings with several spots still yet to fill.

It has been a big day for the Texas Longhorns on the recruiting front with a pair of significant commits with Duncanville (Texas) defensive tackle Alex January and Bradeton (Fla.) cornerback (originally from Texas) Jordon Johnson-Rubell both announcing with about an hour of each other.

January was first to announce, picking the Horns over the likes of LSU, Texas Tech, LSU, and others. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder will be a beast in the middle of the line and appears to be a prototypical one-technique.

If the name sounds sort of familiar, you would be right. Alex’s father Michael played for the Horns in the 1980s.

He is the first defensive lineman of the class of 2024 for head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Later Johnson-Rubell, a 5-foot-11, 180-pounder made it official and picked the Texas hat up off the table at his ceremony in Arlington (Texas). Johnson-Rubell had a final grouping of schools that included Michigan, Ohio State and TCU.

Johnson-Rubell currently attends IMG Academy but proved that you can come home as he will be playing his college football in-state in Austin with the Horns. Johnson-Rubell is a consensus four-star by the recruiting services and gives the Horns a super-talented corner, even if he does not possess that 6-foot height that is en vogue for corners these days at this level.

With the addition of these two players, Texas now sits at 11 commits to date for the class of 2024. Five members play their high school football in the state of Texas while six are out-of-staters.

July certainly has had its share of fireworks for the Horns and we are less than 24 hours in.

Mel Tucker and his Michigan State Spartans landed a big commit in the class of 2024 on Friday night when Henry Hasselbeck gave his pledge to the team. Henry is the son of former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

The three-star signal caller out of Westwood (Mass.) held more than a dozen offers including ones from Boston College (his father’s alma mater), Pittsburgh, Harvard, Dartmouth and Arizona to name a few.

The younger Hasselbeck was set to head to Maryland on a lacrosse scholarship and had been committed to the Terps for close to a year before the football interest really picked up, ultimately leading Hasselbeck to the sport that his father excelled in.

Hasselbeck measures in at 6-foot-3, and close to 170 pounds per recruiting databases, he will have to put on some weight before he will be ready to play Big Ten football, but still has a year of high school football prior to arriving in East Lansing (Mich.) upon signing a letter of intent.

Quarterback has been an issue for Michigan State as of late after losing 2022 starter Payton Thorne to Auburn via the transfer portal. 2023 will see Noah Kim and Katin Houser battle it out for the starting job as Michigan State looks to bounce back from a 5-7 season that saw the Spartans miss a bowl game.

The offensive numbers for Michigan State last year were not good, 96th in the nation in total offense, 57th in passing offense and 90th in scoring offense.

Michigan State now has 10 commits for the class of 2024 in a class that is heavily weighted on the offensive side of the ball with only three defensive players in the class to date.

The Spartans open the 2023 season on September 1st, hosting Central Michigan.
