Summer is underway, and each passing day gets us closer and closer to the start of the college football season. June has prospective recruits visiting college campuses, July will have The Big Ten Media Days, and then August will have stories and news trickling out from teams about their respective depth charts are shaping up for the 2025 season.

While every team within The Big Ten has its share of non-conference opponents throughout the season, with most games falling in the first weeks of the season, the conference match-ups will start to materialize before the end of September. While not serving as elimination games, getting off to a good start within the conference can only help in the race for one of the coveted College Football Playoff berths.

September 20th: Michigan at Nebraska (3:30pm ET kickoff, CBS); Illinois at Indiana (Kickoff and network TBA)

Nebraska won the first two games versus Michigan as B1G opponents back in 2012 (Nebraska 23, Michigan 9) and 2013 (Nebraska 17, Michigan 13), but the Wolverines have been on the winning side of the ledger the last four times the teams have played, with Michigan decisively beating Nebraska 45-7 in Lincoln in 2023. For a program that earned its first bowl game visit since the 2016 season, this could be a barometer game for Matt Rhule and his coaching staff in seeing how far the Cornhuskers have come, and possibly how much further they may need to go to ascend to the level of the perceived conference elite.

Last season, the Indiana Hoosiers were the surprise team of The Big Ten, under their first year of coaching by Curt Cignetti. While Illinois had a tremendous 10-3 season under Bret Bielema in 2024, this game at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington could provide some clues as to how much either team will factor into the conference championship race.

September 27th: Ohio State at Washington/USC at Illinois (Kickoffs and networks TBA); Oregon at Penn State (7:30pm ET kickoff, NBC/Peacock)

Both Ohio State and Washington will begin their Big Ten conference schedules in this contest at Husky Stadium. This will be their first meeting as conference opponents, as Ohio State last visited Husky Stadium in 2007 (Ohio State 33, Washington 14) when Washington was still a member of The Pac-12. As Jedd Fisch begins his second year at the helm for Washington, this game against the defending national champions will be scrutinized to see how the program is developing. Ohio State will begin conference play in their first road trip of the 2025 season.

USC will be making their first trip to Champaign as a member of The Big Ten, as the Trojans easily handled Illinois 55-3 as a Pac-12 member back in 1996. USC will have already played at Purdue (September 13th, 3:30pm ET CBS/Paramount) and Michigan State (September 20th). It will be interesting to see how Illinois plays after the aforementioned game at Indiana on September 20th.

The most anticipated game of The Big Ten season in September is the night game featuring Oregon at Penn State. A rematch of last season’s Big Ten Championship Game, the Penn State faithful are understandably excited about a “White Out” contest against one of the premier Big Ten teams, and it will be interesting to see how Oregon handles what promises to be a raucous environment when the game kicks off. This will be the first time Oregon has played at State College since October 3, 1964, when the Ducks defeated the Nittany Lions, 22-14.

Raiola will be the Huskers’ opening day starter when Nebraska takes on UTEP on Saturday August 31st to kickoff the 2024 season.

Nebraska is hoping that Raiola will help turbo-charge a passing game that finished dead last in the Big Ten a season ago.

Raiola threw for more than 8,000 yards at three different high schools during his prep career which finished at Buford High School in Georgia this past fall. After enrolling early at Nebraska, he impressed in April’s spring game, going 16-for-22 for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, former Nebraska and Washington running back/wide receiver Will Nixon will join Syracuse before the 2024 season. Nixon has almost 30 games under his belt across four seasons in college football.

The Waco, Texas, native will have the opportunity to play for his father Jeff Nixon, who was named next offensive coordinator of the Orange in January and has built over 27 years of coaching experience across both college football and the NFL.

Will Nixon ran for 201 rushing yards last season and scored a touchdown in his second year with the Huskies. While Washington advanced to its first College Football Playoff National Championship appearance, Will Nixon played an important role as the team’s second-leading rusher.

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound running back also is a threat in the backfield having averaged more than six yards per carry and catch in 2023. Will Nixon posted career highs in many categories, though in the receiving game he caught 84 yards along with 13 receptions.

Will Nixon was sidelined the first year of his college career at Nebraska after suffering a torn ACL in summer 2020.

The rising fifth-year is also accomplished in the classroom. Will Nixon earned a spot on the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team and won Washington’s 101 Club Academic Award in the postseason.

Will Nixon was a three-star recruit according to Rivals playing at Midway High School in Texas. He earned district MVP after totaling 2,087 yards from scrimmage and 29 touchdowns as a senior.

Syracuse is heading a new direction with former Georgia secondary coach Fran Brown as head coach and incoming quarterback transfer Kyle McCord from Ohio State. Will Nixon will join the Orange and junior running back LeQuint Allen, who led Syracuse with 1,118 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season.

According to Daniel Libit of Sportico, tax reports show the Big Ten took in the $880 million figure between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.

The Big Ten distributed “about $60.5 million” to the 12 longest-tenured members in the conference, according to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY. Maryland and Rutgers received “about $2 million less” than the other 12 members of the Big Ten.

The Big Ten’s revenue earnings allow it to pass the Southeastern Conference for most revenue among college conferences, and the SEC had $853 million in revenue in fiscal year 2023, according to Sportico. The SEC distributed “an average of about $51.3 million” to each of its 14 members.

The Big Ten spent, including its distributions to member programs, “just over $897 million” in 2023 and “operated at a deficit of just over $17.5 million for the year, but still had net assets totaling $247 million,” according to USA TODAY.

Despite retirement in 2020, former commissioner Jim Delaney was the Big Ten’s “highest-paid employee” having received $5.8 million from retirement or deferred compensation and bonus or incentive compensation, according to Sportico. Delaney remains on the conference’s payroll as an outside consultant.

The Big Ten entered a new media rights deal it signed in 2022 worth nearly $7 billion. It reached agreements with CBS, FOX, NBC, NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Big Ten Network and FS1 and will continue through the 2029-30 season.

Now over a year into its new media agreement, the Big Ten will likely see the beginnings of its impact financially. For comparison on revenue between fiscal years 2023 and 2022, the $880 million last year “represent about a 4% increase in total revenue and a nearly 3% increase in per-school payouts” according to USA TODAY.

The Big Ten also saw Tony Petitti take over after Kevin Warren as conference commissioner in May 2023, and Petitti’s pay was not reported because the report only covered the 2022 calendar year, according to USA TODAY.

Set to launch worldwide on July 19, a full reveal of the modes and features of EA Sports College Football 25 was announced on Friday.

Dynasty and Road To Glory modes will be available in College Football 25, according to a release. Those two modes will allow players “to construct their own powerhouse program as a created coach or vie for the Heisman as a player” in what the video game introduces as CampusIQ, which will be “a suite of features that brings to life the true depth of college football through wide open, fast-paced gameplay across all 134 FBS schools in all areas of the game.”

Over 10,000 players have opted into College Football 25, it was announced in March. Any student-athlete who opts in and has their name, image and likeness used will receive $600 and a copy of the video game.

College Football 25 will also offer “the all-new Road to the College Football Playoff and College Football Ultimate Team” that will “bring fresh online experiences and ways to play.”

“EA SPORTS College Football is BACK! We’ve felt the passion and anticipation of college football fans every step of the way since we first announced this game, and we’re ecstatic to finally be able to show everyone what we’ve been building,” EA Sports SVP and Group GM Daryl Holt stated in a release. “College Football 25 is built with authenticity at its core, inspired by experiences our fans have loved from our games, and fully evolved to reflect modern college football – all of which will immerse them in the sights, sounds, and true-to-life gameplay of the sport they love.”

EA Sports unveiled the cover of College Football 25 on Thursday, showcasing Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and Colorado defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter. They will star on the covers of the Standard and Deluxe editions.

“Donovan, Quinn and Travis are extraordinary talents who impressed and entertained millions of college football fans on the field last season and are poised to do so again this year,” Holt stated in a release. “We’re proud to be able to incorporate thousands of current athletes in College Football 25, and featuring this trio of playmakers and their iconic college programs on the cover is a perfect fit as we usher in a new era for EA SPORTS and college football. I can’t wait for the world to learn more about the game tomorrow.”

ESPN broadcasters such as Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will “call marquee matchups,” along with other broadcast teams such as Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and David Pollack will comprise the virtual booth and “take the mic for all other games.”

Among the gameplay features include Homefield Advantage, which will allow players to “through distractions like screen shaking, missing pre-play icons, and moving play art.” Additional features consist of Pre-Snap Recognition and the Wear & Tear System, which means virtual player stamina is affected by more play so it will be important to “manage your players’ health, limit fatigue, assess risk of injury, and avoid on-field mistakes by using strategic substitutions to ensure your players are at their best when it counts the most.”

The traditions within college football that make it one of a kind will be immersed in College Football 25. Along with team mascots and fight songs, the video game will include “unique team run-outs, rivalry rituals, synchronized crowd-chants, loudness meters as well as real game-day audio.”

Dynasty and Road To Glory modes are also offered in the video game alongside Road to the College Football Playoff, where players will “experience a new way to play competitively across consoles” and “earn rank by upsetting the toughest opponents and securing the votes you need to progress and level up divisions,” as well as College Football Ultimate Team.

College Football Ultimate Team will allow players to “build your dream team of college football stars and legends” in Solo Challenges or H2H seasons, and they can test their skill across consoles “in more competitive formats like College Football Ultimate Team Champs and Champs Gauntlet.”

EA Sports College Football 25 is available for pre-order now. According to Matt Brown of Extra Points, the video game will not be available for PC at launch. EA Sports is also offering an MVP bundle on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that will include deluxe editions of College Football 25 and Madden NFL 25 “with 3-day early access and unlocks a multitude of benefits across both titles.”

Colorado and Nebraska both announced Monday that their Week 2 meeting on Sept. 7 will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CDT on NBC. It will be NBC’s first time broadcasting a game from Memorial Stadium since Thanksgiving Day in 1965.

Second-year head coaches Matt Rhule of Nebraska and Deion Sanders of Colorado will meet again after the Buffaloes earned a 36-14 win in Week 2 last season in Boulder. According to Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline via On3, that game drew more than eight million viewers. This fall, they’ll face one another in the first-ever evening matchup between the two programs at Memorial Stadium.

According to a Colorado release, NBC’s broadcast will be part of the Upfront program, which is “a presentation showcasing the network’s concentrated portfolio of sports, entertainment, news and streaming platforms to advertisers,” and it will pair with the network’s Week 1 broadcast of Fresno State–Michigan in Ann Arbor. Colorado was part of Upfront last season when it opened the campaign against TCU on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff.

Colorado and Nebraska’s history dates back to their time together in the Big 12 Conference — which the Buffaloes will rejoin this fall.

Nebraska has a 49-21-2 advantage in the all-time series, though Colorado has won all three meetings since moving to the Pac-12 Conference following the 2010 season. They’ve split the past six games at Memorial Stadium since 2002.

Sanders and Colorado had nine games not on regional or conference networks in 2023, marking the most in program history according to a release. September’s game against the Cornhuskers will also be the first time the Buffaloes are broadcast on NBC since the Fiesta Bowl in 1995.

Rhule and Nebraska are looking to build off a 5-7 record in their first year together in 2023. Quarterback Heinrich Haarberg, who started eight games last season and led the team with 967 passing yards and seven touchdowns, and the Cornhuskers were No. 9 in the Big Ten Conference averaging 312.8 total yards per game. They also appeared in primetime on NBC last season at Wisconsin in Week 12.

Monte Harrison, who was drafted No. 50 overall by Milwaukee in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Lee’s Summit West High School in Missouri, committed Tuesday to play college football at Arkansas, according to E. Wayne of Razorbacks Wire via USA Today.

Harrison last played in the MLB for Los Angeles on July 12, 20222, in Anaheim. He had a career .176 batting average and hit two home runs in 50 games across parts of three big-league seasons, and he was named to the 2019 Futures Game in the minors.

Harrison committed to play wide receiver at Nebraska before he graduated high school, according to Daniel Fair of HawgBeat.com via Rivals, and he was offered scholarships to Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri.

The Missouri native caught 1,007 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 198 more yards and 12 more scores — in addition to a passing touchdown — his senior year at Lee’s Summit West High School, according to Nick Kosko of On3.

Fifth-year head coach Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks went 4-8 last season in the Southeastern Conference.

Mike Riley, who was the head coach at Oregon State from 1997-98 and 2003-14 and Nebraska from 2015-17, will now be part of the 13-member selection committee. Riley will replace Washington athletics director Pat Chun who was named to his new position in March and recently stepped down, according to a release.

Riley has more than 48 years of college and professional coaching experience, and he’s been head coach in five different professional leagues including the NFL, Canadian Football League, World League of American Football, Alliance of American Football and the United States Football League.

Riley spent time as an assistant coach at USC before landing his first head coaching gig at Oregon State. Following three years as head coach of the San Diego Chargers, he returned to Oregon State where he collected school records of 93 career wins in 14 total seasons as head coach.

Riley most recently was head coach of the New Jersey Generals in the USFL from 2022-23.

Riley is an Alabama alum where he played defensive back. He was part of the Crimson Tide’s 1973 national championship team under head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Lubick began his coaching career as a student assistant and academic supervisor for his father Sonny Lubick at Colorado State in 1995.

Since then he’s been offensive coordinator at Oregon in 2016, Washington in 2017-18 and Nebraska from 2020-21.

Lubick also has stops at Duke as wide receivers coach from 2010-12, safeties coach at Arizona State from 2007-09, and wideouts at Ole Miss and Colorado State from 2005-06 and 2001-04, respectively.

Lubick was college teammates with Choate at Western Montana in 1991. The two will reunite with the Wolfpack after leading long coaching careers.

“Matt has obviously had a long battle, and it’s really gratifying to see him come out the other end,” Choate stated in a release. “One of the things he talked about with our team was gratitude, how grateful he was for the opportunity to coach at Nevada. And I can say the same thing—I’m extremely grateful that Matt is going to be our offensive coordinator. We’re very excited to have him in a position where he can engage with us now. Matt’s an extremely accomplished coach, and even better person, and I’m looking forward to what he’s able to bring. He became the first Asian-American athletics director to lead a Power Five program upon his appointment at Washington State in 2018.

Chun oversaw Washington State when he “was named the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year, ten different WSU sports programs made NCAA tournament appearances and the school won six Pac-12 Championships” and led the Cougars to “record levels of donor support.”

Chun was appointed to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee earlier this year.

Chun also worked at Ohio State from 1997-2012 elevating as high as Executive Associate Athletics Director. After the Buckeyes Chun led Florida Atlantic for five-plus years.

He knows our state, is highly respected in national athletics circles and has an eye for talent. Nebraska interim university president Chris Kabourek announced the hiring less than a week after previous athletics director Trev Alberts departed for Texas A&M.

Dannen was originally appointed Huskies athletics director in October 2023. He made the move from Tulane where he led an overhaul of the program.

Dannen had been athletics director at Tulane since 2015. He was part of the program when it reached three-consecutive bowl games from 2018-20 and won two straight.

Dannen was also in charge when Green Wave student-athletes earned a record-setting department Academic Progress Report of 992, according to a release.

Under Dannen’s guidance, Tulane secured “the largest unrestricted gift in Tulane Athletics history, an endowment gift which funds the operation of a new sport (sailing), and a $10 million lead gift for capital renovations, which is the second largest gift in department history,” according to a release.

“From my first conversation with Troy Dannen, I knew he was a perfect fit for Nebraska,” Kabourek stated in a release. “He is a fierce competitor, he holds himself and his programs to uncommonly high standards, and he cares personally about the success of student-athletes in sports, school and life. Dannen previously served as director of athletics at Northern Iowa from 2008-15. Before that he was the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Executive Director for seven years.

“From my perspective, there has never been a more consequential time in history for higher education and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics,” Alberts stated in a release. “Leadership matters now more than ever before. My interest in Texas A&M is not only due to its prestigious reputation but also because of President (Mark A.) Welsh’s compelling vision in which, I believe, Athletics can play a small but important role in helping Texas A&M achieve unprecedented success.”

According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Alberts is “expected to get a five-year deal with Texas A&M that will put him near the top of the SEC and among the top 10 athletic directors nationally in terms of salary.”

Alberts had a long history at Nebraska — his alma mater. There he’d been AD since 2021, and his Cornhusker roots dig deeper than that.

Alberts was the No. 5 overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft from Nebraska, and he turned in a three-year professional career.

Texas A&M’s new athletics director also has a lengthy history as a broadcaster and has stints with CNN, Sports Illustrated and as an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay.

Alberts was athletics director at University of Nebraska at Omaha from 2009-21 where he led the transition from Division II to Division I.

At Nebraska, Alberts and the Cornhuskers saw a school-record 95% graduation rate across all sports for the past two years according to a release. Alberts also secured a $450 million renovation of Memorial Stadium that will begin later this fall and oversaw a 15-year multimedia rights agreement valued at $301 million.

“With Trev’s expertise, the Aggies are poised to not only excel on the fields, tracks and courts, but also successfully navigate the multi-faceted intersection of sports, commerce and student-athlete empowerment,” Welsh stated in a release. “He has a profound understanding of the intricate business of athletics and the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly in the realm of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL).”
