Downs came into college football as a five-star recruit as part of the class of 2023.

He lived up to the hype and garnered the starting sot at strong safety, becoming the first Crimson Tide true freshman to lead the team in tackles since at least 1970.

Downs was named Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year and received Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.
