Reports: Washington to hire Steve Belichick as defensive coordinator

Washington is hiring New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick as its defensive coordinator.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, Belichick will enter the world of college football after 12 years in the NFL. He is the son of longtime NFL coach and great Bill Belichick.

Steve Belichick called plays defensively the past five seasons in New England. During the 2019 season, the Patriots led the NFL allowing the fewest points and total yards.

Steve Belichick worked with new Washington head coach Jedd Fisch in 2020 when Fisch worked as the quarterbacks coach in New England.

According to ESPN, Steve Belichick and his younger brother Brian Belichick “were offered an opportunity” to remain with the Patriots but Steve Belichick chose Washington.
