Dreams are coming true in Detroit.

The 2024 NFL Draft continued Friday with the second and third rounds picking through No. 100 overall. It began with wide receivers Keon Coleman of Florida State and Georgia’s Ladd McConkey going back to back at Nos. 33-34 to the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively, and ended with Rice’s Luke McCaffrey being picked by the Washington Commanders. No quarterbacks were selected after six went in the first round on Thursday.

More than 150,000 fans attended the draft on Thursday, and all 32 picks are listed in First Round Live Reaction: 2024 NFL Draft.

Michigan men go back-to-back in second round; Jim Harbaugh takes Los Angeles’ first Wolverine in third

Defending national champion Michigan sent an NFL Scouting Combine-record 18 participants to Indianapolis earlier this offseason.

Michigan saw six players drafted in the second and third rounds, bringing its total to seven so far this draft after quarterback J.J. McCarthy went No. 10 overall to the Minnesota Vikings.

Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins was the second Wolverine picked in the draft when he went No. 49 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round. He began back-to-back selections of former Michigan players as cornerback Mike Sainristil went next at No. 50 overall.

New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh drafted his first former Wolverine when he chose linebacker Junior Colson in the third round at No. 69 overall.

The crosstown rival Los Angeles Rams selected former Michigan running back Blake Corum at No. 83 overall in the third round. He started a string of three-straight Wolverines drafted when wide receiver Roman Wilson went No. 84 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers and guard Zak Zinter was picked No. 85 overall by the Cleveland Browns.

Four more of head coach Kirby Smart’s former players heard their names called in Detroit: McConkey and defensive backs Kamari Lassiter, Javon Bullard and Tykee Smith.

Smart shouted each of the four Bulldog draftees on Friday, as he did Thursday for former tight end Brock Bowers and tackle Amarius Mims.

Award season is upon us.

The 2023 College Football Awards were hosted by ESPN on Friday night, crowning and delivering postseason honors to more than a dozen recipients ranging from recognizing the top quarterback to community service.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels received the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding quarterback. Daniels is a Heisman Trophy finalist — the winner is revealed on Saturday — after throwing for 40 touchdowns and receiving a 208.01 passing efficiency rating, both best in the NCAA.

Other honors on offense such as the Doak Walker Award, Biletnikoff Award and John Mackey Award went to Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II, Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, respectively.

Which college football team is most likely bound for the College Football Playoff National Championship.

That answer could remain in either No. 1 Georgia or No. 2 Michigan, while the latter is currently the subject of an alleged sign stealing investigation by the NCAA.

PODCAST: Do we have any more clarity after some major week eight decisions?

Or, it could be any of the remaining six unbeaten teams, such as No. 3 Ohio State or No. 4 Florida State.

Penn State and North Carolina suffered their first losses of the season in Week 8 and face an uphill climb back into title contention.

Here are several players and notes to keep a tab on in this week’s Big Board.

Midseason All-American lists are released

A number of outlets released their midseason All-American lists in recent weeks, including Sporting News, The Associated Press and ESPN.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was unanimously named to all three midseason All-American lists. He is joined by Notre Dame running back Audric Estime, LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers and Georgia tight end Brock Bowers as offensive skill players named to all three lists.

Among the others who were named unanimous midseason All-Americans includes: offensive guards Cooper Beebe of Kansas State and Zak Zinter of Michigan; linebacker Dallas Turner of Alabama; edge rusher Laiatu Latu of UCLA; defensive lineman Howard Cross III of Notre Dame; linebacker Edgerrin Cooper of Texas A&M; safeties Malaki Starks of Georgia and Jaylin Simpson of Auburn; and punter Tory Taylor of Iowa.

How will Ewers’ injury impact Texas?

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers “is expected to miss some time” with a grade 2 AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder.

The Longhorns nearly suffered a setback at the hands of Houston on Saturday. They escaped with a 31-24 win but now face questions surrounding their quarterback position.

Ewers ranked No. 10 in completion percentage and No. 15 in passing efficiency among quarterbacks this season. He’s a key part of the Longhorns offense in year two with Ewers under center.

So where does Texas turn from here? The answer may already have been in front of the Longhorns with quarterback Maalik Murphy.

Murphy entered the game after Ewers departed, and he filled the role while Texas held off the Cougars. Murphy completed one pass for seven yards among two attempts.

Murphy is a former four-star recruit according to 247 Sports, and he has the tools necessary to keep Texas afloat this season, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 238 pounds. Texas also has five-star freshman Arch Manning in the same quarterbacks room.

Texas has five games left before conference championship season heats up, and the Longhorns are prime in the Big 12 race. Their loss to Oklahoma could loom large, as does a potential rematch, but Ewers’ absence will loom even larger until his return.

How will Ohio State’s defense hold up the rest of the season?

Ryan Day said the Buckeyes played “championship level” defense against Penn State on Saturday.

Ohio State isn’t typically known for its defense. High-powered, explosive offense is usually the name of the game for the Buckeyes.

READ: Quotables: Week 8

But in 2023, teams are having trouble moving the ball and scoring against the Buckeyes. They rank No. 4 in the country in total defense allowing an average of 260.1 yards per game and No. 3 in scoring defense allowing 10 points per game.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has transformed the Ohio State defense in two years under his tutelage. He attributed the dramatic change thus far to “knowing the scheme” and having it honed against opponents.

Ohio State will face three teams among its final five games that rank within the bottom half of the Big Ten Conference in total offense: Rutgers, Michigan State and Minnesota.

The other two remaining games are against Wisconsin, which ranks fifth in the conference, and at Michigan, which is third. It’ll be a test and fun challenge to see how the Buckeyes continue to hold up and do so among the best nationally.

Georgia tight end Brock Bowers will have surgery to address an ankle injury suffered Saturday during the game at Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs announced Monday.

According to Anthony Dasher of Rivals, Bowers will undergo tightrope surgery after he sustained a high ankle sprain during the second quarter against the Commodores.

X-rays originally revealed negative results, according to Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, and surgery will allow medical professionals to stabilize Bowers’ ankle and allow it to heal.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Bowers will miss four to six weeks.

Bowers had appeared in all seven games this season for Georgia. He has 567 receiving yards, four receiving touchdowns across 41 receptions and a rushing touchdown.

The calendar has flipped to October, and the college football season will continue on with Week 6 this week.

The College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until November, and the Associated Press Top 25 Poll updates every Sunday.

PODCAST: 5 Questions Florida Needs to Answer After Loss to Kentucky

No. 4 Ohio State will return from a bye week this week and host Maryland. One of the Buckeyes’ contenders for the Heisman Trophy has enjoyed a successful season thus far, and Marvin Harrison Jr. figures to factor into the race for college football’s top award.

Harrison injured his right ankle during Ohio State’s last game at Notre Dame. It’ll be something many keep an eye on as the wide receiver looks to further establish himself atop the Big Ten Conference leaderboards where he is currently fourth in receiving yards and tied for fifth in touchdowns.

Here are several players and notes to keep a tab on in this week’s Big Board.

Brock Bowers, Georgia

Bowers is Georgia’s big, burly tight end.

He had one of his best games of this season last Saturday. He had a game-high 157 receiving yards and a touchdown, his fourth score of the season.

Bowers was targeted six times in the first half against the Tigers, and he hauled in two of those passes for just nine yards.

He stung Auburn most in the second half and converted four first downs while Georgia climbed back from a 17-10 deficit.

READ: Quotables: Week 5

Bowers currently has 413 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

Bowers’ Heisman Trophy odds are +7000 according to FanDuel Sportsbook. He is Georgia’s current receiving leader, and while no tight end has won the Heisman Trophy before, Bowers could turn enough heads to garner his fair share of the vote.

Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss

On the biggest stage and under the brightest lights, Jaxson Dart showed up to play on Saturday.

It didn’t always begin at Ole Miss for Dart. He spent his true freshman season at USC before Lincoln Riley and the new Trojans regime made their way to town.

Now with the Rebels, Dart and his squad of the past two seasons matched up against an LSU team looking to renter itself back into the College Football Playoff mix.

Instead, Dart and Ole Miss stole the show, as the quarterback went toe-to-toe with Tigers gunslinger Jayden Daniels. Dart passed for 389 yards and fourth touchdowns, and Daniel went for 414 passing yards and as many scoring throws.

PODCAST: What we learned coming out of week five

Dart came up clutch in the fourth quarter. The Rebels faced a 49-40 deficit before Dart darted into the end zone on a 1-yard rush bringing the game within 49-47 as 5:06 remained.

Dart found receiver Tre Harris on the go-ahead and game-sealing touchdown pass with 39 seconds left.

Dart’s Heisman Trophy odds are +15000 according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Caleb Williams, USC

Williams makes his return to the Big Board after a big performance at Colorado.

The third-year quarterback tossed six touchdowns and 403 yards en route to a 48-41 win over the Buffaloes. Williams was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Williams became the first Football Bowl Subdivision player in the past 25 years to throw at least six touchdowns for multiple programs, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

READ: Stat Pack: Week 5

Williams made headlines before the season when the possibility of his return in lieu of the NFL Draft grew to greater speculation.

But could he really return to the Trojans in 2024?

That’s a story for another day, and today Williams stands as the leader in passing touchdowns with 21.

Williams is also the leader in passing efficiency behind a rating of 217.70, almost 20 points higher than the next closest quarterback.

So even when he’s finding the end zone is Williams being efficient. And he found the end zone with frequency against the Buffaloes, doing so six times throughout the game.

Williams is currently the player with the best odds to win the Heisman Trophy and his odds are +170 according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
