Over 700,000 fans attended the draft this week in Detroit according to The Associated Press via NFL.com, a record-breaking number topping the previous best set in Nashville in 2019.

Like the previous two, offensive players began the third day of the NFL Draft with Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders going No. 101 overall to the Carolina Panthers and Troy Franklin reuniting with Oregon quarterback Bo Nix at No. 102 overall to the Denver Broncos.

Spencer Rattler, Jordan Travis become first QBs taken since Round 1

More than 100 picks went between the six taken in the first round on Thursday, which already set a record for most quarterbacks taken in the opening round of the draft.

Former South Carolina and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler broke the streak in round four when he went No. 150 overall to the New Orleans Saints. 

Rattler leaves South Carolina as the all-time leader in completion percentage with 67.5% completion.

Former Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was chosen No. 171 overall in the fifth round by the New York Jets. He later would be paired with wide receiver teammate Johnny Wilson when the Jets picked him in the sixth round.

Travis finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting last season despite suffering a season-ending broken leg in the second-to-last regular season game.

Alabama’s Jaylen Key is Mr. Irrelevant

Every year, the final pick of the draft is regarded as “Mr. Irrelevant.” It’s so widely recognized as a special selection that “Irrelevant Week” is an annual celebration that honors that last player picked in the draft recognized by the NFL, according to MrIrrelevant.org.

Alabama defensive back Jaylen Key is this draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” as he was chosen No. 257 overall in the seventh round by the New York Jets.

Key played last season with the Crimson Tide after spending the previous four years with Alabama at Birmingham. He started 12 games at Alabama and made 60 tackles, one pass break-up and an interception.

Key earned an honorable mention nod in 2022 with the All-Conference USA team. He had three interceptions for the Blazers that season, tying for the team lead.

The NFL announced Tuesday that 321 players were invited to the Combine taking place Feb. 26-March 4.

Seventy-nine teams will be represented at the Combine this year.

Michigan had a Combine-record 18 players invited this year. Among the Wolverines who were invited include quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and defensive lineman Kris Jenkins.

Heisman Trophy-winning LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will be among the gunslingers taking part in drills. Fellow Heisman finalists Marvin Harrison Jr., Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. will also be in attendance at the Combine, as well as 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams.

The top-five teams in the College Football Playoff rankings all earned their 11^th wins of the season last Saturday. No. 4 Florida State had the highest margin of victory at 45 points against North Alabama, but it didn’t come without a cost.

Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis left the game in the first quarter with a horrific left leg injury. He announced on Monday that his college career is over while stating “the great memories created here at FSU will never fade.” 

Here are some noteworthy quotes as focus turns from Week 12 to Week 13. 

Ryan Day, Ohio State 

The Buckeyes were without All-American linebacker Tommy Eichenberg last week against Minnesota. 

Eichenberg missed a second-straight game as he dealt with an upper-body injury. He leads Ohio State with 73 tackles this season. 

The Buckeyes took care of business against the Golden Gophers, defeating them 37-3 on Senior Day. Eichenberg, a graduate, tried his hardest to get into the game, but head coach Ryan Day said the decision to keep the linebacker out ultimately fell on him. 

“We’ll get Tommy back for next week,” Day said. “Tommy was ready to play in this one and I had to pull him back, and it was almost a fistfight. But I won. It took some even, I mean, I’ll be honest, it took some late night texts last night. He wanted to play, and this is a guy who has put so much into this program. Coming back, and for senior day for him not to be out there was really hard for Tommy, really hard. But I just explained to him there’s just too much on the line moving forward to risk any kind of setback, that we need him at his best and he was, after some calming down, he was OK. But it was not easy for him to not play in this game, athat was my decision. He was ready to go. He pushed himself to get to a point but he’ll have another great week of practice and be at 100% going into next week.” 

Jerry Kill, New Mexico State 

New Mexico State marched onto Auburn’s home field and upset the Tigers 31-10, holding them without a touchdown in the second half. 

It was the first time in Aggies program history that they defeated a team from the Southeastern Conference. They were paid around $1.7 million by Auburn to play them last Saturday.

Aggies head coach Jerry Kill is in just his second season with the program. He has 11 years of experience as a skipper, taking stops at Northern Illinois, Minnesota and TCU before joining New Mexico State prior to the 2022 season. 

The Aggies are 9-3 and will play in the Conference USA championship game Dec. 1 against undefeted Liberty. But until then, Kill and New Mexico State will enjoy its win over Auburn. 

“We walked in — and I probably shouldn’t say it but you know, life’s short and I may not be here tomorrow, something I’ve always said — I walked in, I said, ‘Hey, we just got 1.7 million to play a southeast conference team,’ so how about that,” Kill said. “One-point-seven million and winning the game, and so the kids, they’re all fired up. They’re wondering when they’re going to get it. They want it to be all NIL money.” 

Sherrone Moore, Michigan 

The Wolverines became the first program in college football to reach 1,000 wins in program history with their 11^th-straight at Maryland last Saturday. 

They did it without head coach Jim Harbaugh, who accepted and served the second of a three-game suspension as a result of the Big Ten Conference’s investigation into in-person scouting. It’s also the fifth time Harbaugh has been suspended from a game this season.

Michigan offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore served as acting head coach once again, and he said he wants Harbaugh edited into the postgame celebrations of the 1,000^th win. 

“First we need to edit coach in there. There’s enough technology in the world today that we can get that done so we can do that,” Moore said. “But I mean, just it’s historic to be a part of this university, this place, this team, so really cool just to be a part of it. Guys are just ecstatic to get that 100th win, but they all knew exactly what time it was right after that. They all know what’s ahead so I’m super excited for that challenge.”

The Buckeyes defense had just forced their second-straight and fourth three-and-out of the day, and the Nittany Lions lined up to punt at their own 11-yard line.

Penn State punter Riley Thompson punted 40 yards down the field, but the football kicked off Ohio State’s Lorenzo Styles Jr. and into the arms of the Nittany Lions, setting up their new possession at their 48-yard line in a 10-6 game. 

Ohio State’s defense went out and stopped the Nittany Lions on a three-and-out again. 

“Probably where I’m most proud of them is we got to stop in their end and then we turned it over on the punt return and we came right back out and stopped them again,” Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said. “I think that shows a lot of confidence and a lot of want to, ‘Hey, OK, that’s fine.’ You don’t flinch in that situation because that’s easy to hang your head, and they went out there and got to stop so I think that sequence right there kind of shows where we’re at right now.” 

Ohio State’s defense stole the show during Saturday’s top-10 bout with Penn State, snapping the Nittany Lions’ 13-game streak of at least 30 points and holding them to a season-low 240 total yards. 

Penn State had trouble converting and sustaining drives, going 1-for-16 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth down. 

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said he felt the Buckeyes fed off of one another on defense, and he said Ohio Stadium was “as loud as I’ve heard in a long time.” 

“I just felt the toughness, the physicality on defense,” Day said. “We started off with really stopping the run and then forcing to throw the ball, and there’s a lot of people who did a lot of great things on defense, but I got to give Jim Knowles a lot of credit and his staff for the adjustments they’ve made. That was two top-10 wins now in the first seven games where our defense played really well, and now I’m happy for our guys.” 

This season has brought a significant change to the Buckeyes defense, which has faced challenges allowing explosive plays and teams the ability to beat them with big yardage plays. 

Penn State nearly had Ohio State’s number in 2022 when they had the Buckeyes within 30-24 with less than six minutes remaining before scoring two touchdowns. This year, Ohio State dominated on defense. 

“They now have confidence that they can win the game on defense,” Knowles said. “I don’t look at stats, but I guess Penn State had a pretty good defense, so we talked to them before the game about, ‘Hey, you’re not just playing Penn State’s offense — you’re playing Penn State’s defense.’ If they make one play, we got to make two. If they make two, we got to make three so it’s a sense of maturity, leadership, yeah, maybe a little chip on your shoulder, and we’ve done a lot of work to have everyone have faith in us for sure.”

Through seven games Ohio State has a defense that ranks inside the top 10 in the country in total defense and third in the Big Ten Conference in scoring defense. 

It’s a change that Knowles attributes to knowing the scheme and applying it the best they can. 

“They know the scheme, and when I make adjustments during the week and the things you talked about that we had to get the stops, we had to get them off schedule and we make little adjustments in the scheme. They pick up on it, and that’s a big deal because winning those downs in a game like that is huge and that only comes with preparation and with guys who are knowledgeable about the scheme.” 

Day highlighted the play of freshman cornerback Jermaine Matthews Jr. for stepping up in his performance especially in the absence of junior Denzel Burke who missed the game with injury. 

Ohio State linebackers Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers topped the tackles totaled for the Buckeyes on Saturday collecting a combined 14 tackles. The linebacker corps was an area that stood out to Knowles. 

“That intermediate passing game combined with really strong running attack; we knew that they were going to be a real focus in terms of making plays,” Knowles said. “I’ve always had faith in them and they’re doing the right things. And then it’s that competitive excellence. It’s showing up when we need them the most and those guys are veterans and they showed that we can count on them.” 

Saturday served as sort of a high point of this season for Ohio State’s defense, which now has two top-10 wins under its belt and allowed 14 points or fewer in each game. 

“I thought that was the most confident and energetic group that I’ve been around probably since ’19 out there on the field today,” Day said. “The whole group was just, they had that look in their eye and they were getting the crowd involved.”

Day reiterated that the expectation at Ohio State “is to be the best in the country,” and he thinks the Buckeyes defense “has a chance to do that.” 

Another top-10 win with a clunky offense that got going when it needed to paired with a defense that made the stops is something that makes the Buckeyes and Day proud, and he said Knowles is “taking the next step with our personnel and the guys are playing with confidence.” 

“I’ll forget some guys because there was just a lot of great play on defense but if we can play like this, then that’s championship level defense,” Day said. “And if we can keep growing as a team, then we’ll be tough to beat here down the road.”
