NCAA President Charlie Baker is speaking out about prop betting and college sports, and he wants to see a change within sports gambling.

Baker released a statement Wednesday calling for sportsbooks to discontinue prop bets within college contests. He stated “the NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game.”

READ: Washington names Washington State’s Pat Chun new AD

“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competition and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed,” Baker stated. “The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets. This week we will be contacting officials across the country in states that still allow these bets and ask them to join Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and many others and remove college prop bets from all betting markets. The NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game – issues across the country these last several days show there is more work to be done.”

With sports betting on the rise, the NCAA is acting to protect student-athletes from harassment and working to protect the integrity of the game – this week shows why it’s so important to act. pic.twitter.com/krATwpS4hZ
— NCAA News (@NCAA_PR) March 27, 2024

Baker is the latest leader to put in question prop bets, which some states already disallow including Maryland and Ohio.

Irregular betting patterns have become a popular topic in recent years as mor states legalize sports gambling. Prop bets are unique because bettors gamble on outcomes unrelated to the final score.

According to Ralph D. Russo of The Associated Press, there are 38 states that allow some form of sports betting.

The NCAA also “has partnered with a data science company called Signify, which also works with the NBA Players Association and WNBA, to identify online threats made to athletes during championship events that are linked to wagering,” according to the AP.

Here are where some states stand on sports gambling, according to the AP:

Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania “have rules prohibiting prop betting on college athletes that predate the NCAA’s recent push.”

Connecticut, Illinois and Iowa “do not allow college athlete prop bets involving in-state teams.”

READ: Cincinnati hires Brad Wittke as chief of staff

Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan and Wyoming “allow bettors to place prop bets on college athletes regardless of where they play.”

Ohio, Maryland and Vermont “have removed prop betting on college athletes online and in sportsbooks.”

Baker figures to lead an important effort to remove prop betting on college competition from sportsbooks. There have been instances around the NCAA, such as when a Temple men’s basketball regular season game was flagged by U.S. Integrity “for wagering irregularities,” according to the AP.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl announced Wednesday that he is retiring after this season.

Bohl has spent the past 10 seasons with the Cowboys, and he’s coached the likes of NFL quarterback Josh Allen and linebacker Logan Wilson.

“Being the head football coach of the Wyoming Cowboys has been a privilege,” Bohl stated in a release. “I felt like now was the time for me step away and entrust the program to new leadership. I want to thank all the young men who have worn the Brown and Gold over the past 10 years for their dedication and for their passion in representing this football program, this university and this state. Many thanks to all the assistant coaches and staff who have helped build Wyoming football into a consistently winning program over this past decade.”

Across his decade-plus tenure at Wyoming, Bohl accumulated a 60-60 record. The Cowboys will play Toledo in the Arizona Bowl on Dec. 30, and Bohl has led Wyoming to six bowl appearances, most of any head coach in program history.

Wyoming defensive coordinator and safeties coach Jay Sawvel has been promoted to head coach, according to a release.

There are five teams that have already clinched bowl edibility this season.

No. 1 Georgia stands atop the college football world with the longest active winning streak of 23 games. Fresno State, which had a winning streak of 13 games, lost its first one to Wyoming last Saturday.

PODCAST: Kirby Smart is Right for Not Caring

Alongside the Bulldogs are No. 2 Michigan, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 10 USC and No. 14 Louisville. The Cardinals picked up a signature win over Notre Dame, dropping the Fighting Irish to 5-2 having lost two of their past three.

Here are some noteworthy quotes as focus turns from Week 6 to Week 7.

Cristobal on Miami’s kneel down mistake to Georgia Tech

Then-No. 17 Miami led 20-17 going into the final minute against the Yellow Jackets, and had enough of an advantage where a kneel down would’ve sealed the game and the win.

But Miami didn’t take the option to kneel the clock out. Instead, running back Donald Chaney Jr. was handed the football eight-consecutive times, and on the final one, disaster struck.

Chaney fumbled the football at Georgia Tech’s 26-yard line and the Yellow Jackets recovered the ball. Facing a long way to go, they fired off completions of 30 and 44 yards to move all the way into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.

“We had our opportunities, even though we didn’t play well,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “Obviously we could have coached better, could have made a better decision. All those things were on the table and we just didn’t do it, and Saturday is going to be here in a hurry against an excellent football team, and we got to go on the road and we got to get it done so very simple.”

Chip Kelly on UCLA’s big win over No. 13 Washington State

The Bruins also picked up an upset win over the Cougars, handing them their first loss of the season.

PODCAST: Talking winners, top teams and much more after week six

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is notorious for his offensive schemes, but the Bruins defense stepped up to the plate last Saturday.

Defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn was faced with the challenge of stopping a Cougars offensive spearheaded by quarterback Cam Ward. Ward had passed for more than 300 yards three times and topped 400 twice already in the season.

UCLA did enough of a job to nullify Washington State’s passing game and held Ward to a season-low 197 passing yards. The Bruins also forced a pair of interceptions.

Kelly said the defensive staff led by Lynn “did an outstanding job in that whole group.”

“I think our entire defensive staff led by him, did an unbelievable job because that was the No. 2 ranked passing offense in the country, and to hold them to that and not allow them really to rush it was outstanding when really we gave them one score on the offensive side of the ball so but besides that they were phenomenal,” Kelly said. “So the whole coaching staff and players were outstanding on the defensive side.”

Miley Cyrus’ name drops in Smart’s postgame press conference

While the Bulldogs raced away to their sixth win of the season behind a 51-13 performance against No. 20 Kentucky, head coach Kirby Smart was faced with a wrecking ball reference postgame.

A wrecking ball analogy compared Georgia’s performance to one as such, and the Bulldogs do have the No. 8 total offense behind an average of 502.3 yards per game.

READ: Stat Pack: Week 6

That’s a stout offensive output. Georgia also has the No. 10 scoring offense averaging 40.7 points each time they take the field.

In jest, Smart took the postgame wrecking ball reference and ran with it.

“I don’t know who Miley Cyrus is, like, what does she have to do with a wrecking ball?” Smart said. “I know Eric Chruch ‘Wrecking Ball,’”

Week 3 set up for a big following week of ball games.

Each member of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll top-four didn’t exactly run away with their outings, as No. 1 Georgia battled a 14-3 halftime deficit, No. 2 Michigan held a 7-6 second-quarter lead over Bowling Green, No. 3 Texas was tied at 10 with Wyoming in the fourth quarter and No. 4 Florida State allowed 19 unanswered points to end its 31-29 win over Boston College.

PODCAST: College Football Needs Coaches Like Lane Kiffin and Deion Sanders

The tight competition led to the Longhorns and Seminoles flip-flopping in the rankings, and No. 10 Oregon entered the top-10 by steamrolling ahead past Hawaii 55-10.

Here are some noteworthy quotes as focus turns from Week 3 to Week 4.

Tim Albin, Ohio

The Bobcats hosted Iowa State and came out with their first Power 5 win since 2017.

Albin and Ohio saw a scoreless first half turn into a defensive showdown between the two teams. Ohio was edged in total yards 271 to 247.

Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke found receiver Sam Wiglusz on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 11:18 left in the third quarter, and kicker Gianni Spetic booted a 27-yard field goal to claim a 10-0 lead.

It was enough for the win as Iowa State’s comeback bid fell short. Ohio intercepted the Cyclones after their missed game-tying field goal, staking a big claim in the win.

“I could not be more jubilant for our fans, this university and Athens,” Albin said. “It was electric out there, unbelievable showing, noon kickoff against a really a great opponent. Both teams, I thought, defensively going in it was going to be like that. I really did. Nobody was panicked at halftime with the score and just the defensive effort kept us in it at halftime, a few adjustments. We were able to get enough things done offense to to get some points on the board, and I could not be happier with the team and how they won.”

Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

This week’s big top-10 showdown will take place in South Bend, Indiana.

No. 6 Ohio State will complete its home-and-home series with No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday night when the two teams meet for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has the chance to get back at his alma mater one year after the Buckeyes spoiled his head coaching debut, and Freeman had kind words for Ohio State’s program.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Ryan Day again,” Freeman said. “He’s done an unbelievable job leading that program. I’ve told him every time I talk to him that he’s just done a tremendous job of really leading that program. So we know it’s going to be a really good opponent with a great coaching staff, and we’re looking forward to that.”

Freeman said “a lot of different factors” go into the differences between last year’s matchup and this season’s, but experience is the biggest key of them all.

“You have a year under your belt. It’s not the first game of the year,” Freeman said. “You’ve been able to develop an identity as a program with these first four games and so it’s a lot different than what it was last year being the first game of that season for me and the first game of the year.”

Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin appears to be readying for someone else.

Someone else as in Alabama and its defensive coordinator, who are next for No. 15 Ole Miss on Saturday. Kevin Steele is Alabama’s defensive coordinator, and he’s in his first season in the role.

The Rebels climbed to No. 15 in the latest AP Poll after defeating Georgia Tech 48-23 behind Jaxson Dart’s 251 passing yards and the team’s 299 rushing yards also led by 136 from Dart.

According to Ben Garrett of On3 Sports, Kiffin and the Rebels seem to be preparing to play an Alabama defense led by Crimson Tide cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson rather than Steele.

“We’ve been against Kevin a number of times,” Kiffin said. “Worked with him at Alabama and against him at Auburn and LSU. There seems like there’s been a change there. I don’t know what happened after the Texas game, but our guys watching the TV copy and schematically in this last game, certainly seems like T-Rob’s now calling the defense. We played him before at South Carolina, so we’re preparing accordingly for him calling the defense. He’s done a good job, too, and they’ve got really good players.”

Harrison Mevis, Missouri

Mevis broke the Southeastern Conference record with a 61-yard field goal as time expired on Saturday.

Missouri needed a big fourth quarter in order to upset then-No. 15 Kansas State. It trailed 24-17 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter, and it came down to special teams for the win.

READ: Missouri uses walk-off field goal to beat No. 15 Kansas State

Mevis’ 12-point day completed with two additional field goals, an average of 64.3 yards across six kickoffs and three converted extra points. But his final field goal sealed the win and the upset.

“I kind of forgot everything, but I was locked in,” Mevis said. “I knew what I had to do. I knew that, give the defense credit, they went, made them go three and out two times. (It) gave me a chance for the kick. So, really, it’s just doing the little things right. It comes down to the little things, it comes down to snap-hold operation, it comes down to me hitting a clean ball, it comes down to me getting through the ball, and you know, all those things clicked, and we made the kick.”

The Associated Press top-10 are hitting the road this week.

Week 3 presents a slate of games that appears interesting, especially for ranked teams on the road. Eight ranked programs are on the road this week including four of the top-10.

No. 1 Georgia hosts South Carolina in a Southeastern Conference matchup. The Bulldogs are already 2-0 behind 577 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Carson Beck, while the Gamecocks are led by Spencer Rattler for a second-straight season.

Here are several games to watch this week.

No. 3 Florida State at Boston College

The Seminoles are off to one of the hottest starts in college football propelling themselves to No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Top 25, thanks in large part to their Week 1 victory over then-No. 5 LSU.

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis has had back-to-back games of at least 175 passing yards and two touchdowns. The sixth-year gunslinger has also had his legs involved on the ground, rushing for at least 20 yards in both outings this season.

While the Seminoles have an eight-game winning streak which is the longest in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Boston College enters with a 1-1 record.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles can appreciate their surge up to No. 3 in the poll, their highest ranking since 2017, but there is still more work to do in order to truly embrace it all.

“There is an appreciation for where we’ve come because I watch our players work. I watch what they put into it. I see how hard our coaches coach. I see the program-wide investment to see guys believe, get better and then you obviously respond to the situations that we have found ourselves in,” Norvell said. “Oh, somebody says that we’re highly rated or highly ranked, whatever, or not. None of that matters. It’s about what we are willing to do when we show up and when we go to work. I believe in this team, I believe in this team for what they’ve been through. I believe in this team for the guys that have said yes to come be a part of it and the challenges that are presented to them when they were making that choice.”

No. 8 Washington at Michigan State

A matchup between future conference members of the Big Ten is on tap in East Lansing, Michigan, this Saturday.

The No. 8 Huskies enter 2-0 behind strong quarterback outings from Michael Penix Jr. Penix currently leads the NCAA in total offense with an average of 434 yards per game.

Washington has outscored its two opponents 99-29 through the first two games. The strengths for the Huskies remain in the passing game, and receiver Rome Odunze leads the team with 239 receiving yards.

Michigan State will be without head coach Mel Tucker, who is suspended without pay as he is subject of an ongoing sexual harassment investigation.

“I think the thing that we’ve just focused on, it’s our season theme, is us versus us and just focusing on what we’re in charge of, what we control,” Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “We know we’re going to go out there. It’s going to be a hostile environment and I think anytime there’s strife and things like that it has an effect for teams at times to pull them closer together, and so I think without a doubt in my mind they’re going to come out ready to rip and play well.”

Wyoming at No. 4 Texas

It’s all about trust for Texas.

The Longhorns are one of the several AP Top 10 teams at home this week, and they will do so defending their new positioning in the rankings.

Quinn Ewers and Texas prevailed over then-No. 3 Alabama last week, besting the Crimson Tide 34-24. Ewers claimed a number of national awards for his performance as he threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns.

Wyoming enters this week’s bout 2-0 behind quarterback Andrew Peasley. The Cowboys also lead the Mountain West Conference in sacks averaging 3.5 per game.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said the Longhorns have “aspirations of being champions this year,” and they’re off to a hot start on their way to possibly claiming a Big 12 title and more.

“We have an adage, trust equals time plus consistency. And so it takes time to earn trust,” Sarkisian said. “But you also have to be consistent, whether you’re a person, a staff, whatever you are, so that they can feel what it looks like over and over and over. It’s hard to trust somebody when two days you do something one way then the third day, you totally contradict yourself. And so we’ve tried to be really consistent with our messaging, and we knew over time as our program grew that we could earn more trust along the way.”
