It was supposed to be Michigan’s seamless transition. When Jim Harbaugh bolted for the NFL in 2024, Sherrone Moore was handed the keys to one of college football’s crown jewels. Young, charismatic, and already steeped in the Wolverines’ culture, Moore looked like the perfect heir. Two seasons later, he’s out in disgrace—fired for cause, arrested within hours, and leaving behind a program scrambling to salvage its reputation.

The speed of Moore’s fall is breathtaking. On December 10, the university announced his dismissal, citing “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Minutes later, police in Pittsfield Township detained him during an assault investigation. By nightfall, Moore was booked on charges of felony home invasion and misdemeanor stalking. The man who once led Michigan into battle now faces a courtroom instead of a sideline.

Moore’s record was respectable—17 wins in two seasons, a 9–3 mark this fall, and a Cheez-It Citrus Bowl berth against Texas. But his tenure was never free of turbulence. He served a suspension tied to Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal earlier this year, a reminder that the program’s off-field shadows were growing longer. Now, those shadows have swallowed him whole.

The timing could not be worse. Interim coach Biff Poggi inherits a team preparing for a marquee bowl game amid chaos. Recruiting momentum is at risk. Alumni and fans are left wondering how a program that prides itself on tradition and integrity keeps finding itself in scandal’s grip. Athletic Director Warde Manuel, already under fire for his handling of past controversies, faces renewed scrutiny.

Moore’s personal life adds another layer of tragedy. Married with three daughters, his alleged misconduct has shaken not only the Michigan community but also his own family. The university’s leadership has emphasized accountability, but the damage is already done. The Wolverines must now rebuild trust while their former coach fights for his freedom.

In the end, Moore’s story is a cautionary tale: in college football, success on Saturdays means little if off-field conduct cannot withstand the spotlight. Michigan thought it had found stability after Harbaugh. Instead, it has another scandal, another interim coach, and another reminder that reputations can collapse faster than a pocket under blitz pressure.

Reigning national champion Michigan has added a defensive back from the Mountain West Conference via the transfer portal.

Former UNLV defensive back Ricky Johnson announced on social media Saturday his commitment to transfer and join the Wolverines after four seasons with the Rebels.

Johnson will be part of new head coach Sherrone Moore’s first season at the helm of Michigan’s program. The 6-foot-1 defensive back is a veteran of 30 games, including a career-high 12 last season after battling back from an injury in fall camp 2022 that limited him to three games that year, who has compiled 78 tackles, four interceptions and 14 passes defended.

Johnson posted career bests across a number of statistical categories in 2023. He totaled 36 tackles, including 25 solo and a season-high six against Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, in addition to seven passes defended, which tied for 10th-most in the Mountain West Conference, and three tackles for loss. He was also named to the preseason all-conference third team before the campaign.

Johnson broke out in 2021 when his three interceptions tied for the UNLV team lead. He collected 25 tackles and two pass break-ups. The Houston native is also a standout in the classroom, having been a three-time member of the Academic All-Mountain West Team from 2020-22 and earning recognition as a 2021 Mountain West Scholar Athlete.

One coach is heading north and crossing rivalry lines as he’s taken the run game coordinator and running backs coach roles.

Michigan announced Wednesday that Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford was hired to fill the same role.

READ: Texas A&M names Nebraska’s Trev Alberts next athletics director

“Tony is an elite running backs coach who is an outstanding mentor and example for young men in all aspects of football and life,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore stated in a release. “I know that he will have a profound impact on our running back room and football program. We are excited to have Tony and his wife, Trina, and their boys join the Michigan Football Family.”

Alford spent the past nine seasons with the Buckeyes. He’d been part of teams that went 5-3 against Michigan since he arrived at Ohio State in 2015.

It isn’t the first time a coach has switched sides in the rivalry culminating in “The Game” at the end of each regular season. Ohio State hired Greg Mattison and Al Washington to be part of its defensive staff when Ryan Day took over as head coach prior to the 2019 season.

Alford will replace Mike Hart as Wolverines running backs coach after the team announced Hart wouldn’t be retained.

Alford’s hiring is the latest move in Moore’s tenure as Michigan head coach. Moore took over for Jim Harbaugh upon the Wolverines’ College Football Playoff National Championship victory over Washington, and he’s made sweeping changes to the program’s coaching staff.

Michigan is reportedly narrowing down its options to fill its defensive coordinator vacancy.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Wolverines are planning to hire Wink Martindale as their next defensive coordinator.

READ: Boston College hires Bill O’Brien as head coach

The contract and agreement between Michigan and Martindale “still is being finalized but it is not expected to be an issue,” according to Schefter. He’ll join Sherrone Moore’s coaching staff after Moore was named head coach in January.

Martindale spent the past two seasons with the New York Giants as their defensive coordinator. He arrived in New York after four seasons in the same role with the Baltimore Ravens.

Martindale first started in the NFL with the then-Oakland Raiders as inside linebacker coach in 2004.

His first job as defensive coordinator came with the Denver Broncos in 2010, and then later Martindale joined the Ravens in 2012 where he coached linebackers for six years.

Martindale also has pervious college coaching stops at Cincinnati, Defiance College, Notre Dame, Western Illinois and Western Kentucky according to Michael Baca of NFL.com.

I am excited to have Kirk and Grant take on greater responsibilities in our offense as they continue working with our players to help further their development on and off the field.”

“I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for the faith that he has displayed in me over the past six years and for supporting my growth as a football coach during that time,” Moore stated in a release. “I also want to thank Athletic Director Warde Manuel, President Santa Ono and members of the Board of Regents for putting their faith and trust in me to be the next leader of this football program. I am excited to reward that trust.

“I have been preparing my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place to be head coach than at the University of Michigan. We will do everything each day as a TEAM to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played at the University of Michigan for the past 144 years. Our standards will not change. We will be a tough, physical, disciplined, hungry, championship-level team that loves football and plays with passion for the game, the winged helmet and each other. We will also continue to achieve excellence off the field, in the classroom and in our communities. I am excited to start working in this new role with our players, coaches and staff.”

Moore will enter his seventh year at Michigan in 2024. He spent the first six as an offensive coach and the past three in a coordinator role.

Moore is the first African American head coach in Michigan program history.

“Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, especially the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football,” Manuel stated in a release. “He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he mentors. The players love playing for him and being with him in the building every day.

“Sherrone stepped up this fall and served as the interim head coach when the program and especially the team needed him. Sherrone handled that situation in a way that sealed my already-growing confidence in him. He didn’t make it about him, it was always about the team! We are thrilled to have Sherrone and his wife, Kelli, and the entire Moore family step into this new role for our football program and university community.”

Moore also spent time coaching at Central Michigan from 2014-17 and Louisville as a graduate assistant from 2009-11 then as tight ends coach from 2012-13.

Fresh off winning the College Football Playoff National Championship, Michigan will be in need of a new head coach.

Wolverines athletics director Warde Manuel and university president Santa Ono released statements on social media Wednesday night upon the news of Jim Harbaugh’s departure for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL.

Thank you Coach Harbaugh and forever Go Blue! pic.twitter.com/j4pPRJFK7B
— Michigan Football (@UMichFootball) January 25, 2024

Here is Manuel’s full statement, including a mention that Michigan made an effort to “make Jim the highest paid coach in college football.”

“I want to thank Jim for everything he has done for our football program, athletic department and the University of Michigan over the past nine years,” Manuel stated. “Every day, he has worked extremely hard to elevate the stature of Michigan across the world, with the goal of winning championships and developing young men on and off the football field.

“Jim did exactly what he sought to do at Michigan, build our program to consistently win Big Ten Championships and compete for national championships, culminating with a record three straight outright conference titles and the national championship this year. He did the same off the field by graduating his players and providing life experiences through mentorships, internships and team trips around the globe.

“We have been discussing a new contract that would make Jim the highest paid coach in college football. In the end, he wanted to explore and ultimately decided to pursue a return to coaching in the NFL. We can’t thank Jim enough for all that he has done for our student-athletes, staff and Michigan Football. He will always be a huge part of our rich history, and will be remembered as an all-time great Wolverine, as both a championship player and coach.

“Jim has always been extremely upfront with his communication regarding NFL opportunities and has been helpful with this transition in leadership. We had a great conversation tonight when he informed me of this decision to return to the NFL and offered his assistance in helping identify the needs for the program moving forward.

“We are working quickly to hire the next head coach for the program and will do everything possible to keep this current staff and team together.

“We appreciate Jim’s dedication and passion for Michigan, the university and Ann Arbor, and I wish Jim and the entire Harbaugh family much success with the Los Angeles Chargers.”

Ono described Michigan’s recent pursuit of a contract extension for Harbaugh and thanked him for his contributions to the program.

“We have been in talks with Jim Harbaugh for the last several weeks and have tried our best to retain him as our football coach,” Ono stated. “Jim called me (Wednesday) and let me know that he has made the difficult decision to leave Michigan and join the Los Angeles Chargers in pursuit of his NFL dreams.

“For the fans, the players, and for me personally, we are sad to hear of Jim’s departure. His drive and ambition turned our program around, delivered our first national championship in a quarter century and maintained Michigan as the all-time winningest team in the history of college football.

“I thank Jim for all he has done for the University of Michigan and respect his decision. He has been an extraordinary leader and a friend. I will be cheering for Jim as he embarks on this next adventure.”

Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh is joining the Los Angeles Chargers as their new head coach, according to multiple reports.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Harbaugh was in Los Angeles for a second interview on Tuesday, and “he’s not expected to leave” to head back to Michigan.

The former San Francisco 49ers head coach returns to the NFL after a decade-long absence. Instead, he spent that time coaching his alma mater.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Wolverines offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore is “the favorite” to succeed Harbaugh as head coach. Moore served as interim head coach for six games while Harbaugh was suspended for two separate instances this season.

Harbaugh coached Michigan for nine seasons, taking the Wolverines to the top of the college football world and winning the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Harbaugh took over at Michigan after Brady Hoke prior to the 2015 season. He compiled an 89-25 record, including a 3-5 record against Ohio State in ‘The Game.’

READ: Reports: LSU to name Cortez Hankton, Joe Sloan co-offensive coordinators

Harbaugh earned his first win over the Buckeyes in 42-27 fashion during the 2021 season. The Wolverines made their first CFP appearance shortly after winning the Big Ten Conference Championship.

Michigan repeated as Big Ten champions in each of the past three years.

During his first stint in the NFL with the 49ers, Harbaugh went 44-19 and took San Francisco to the Super Bowl in 2012.

Harbaugh’s departure makes three CFP teams to lose their head coaches this offseason, as Nick Saban retired at Alabama and Kalen DeBoer left Washington to take the opening with the Crimson Tide.

The confetti raining down on the field at NRG Stadium in Houston. The music. The sights. The sounds.

The No. 1 Wolverines took it all in on Monday night, just after beating No. 2 Washington 34-13 in the College Football Playoff National Championship. It secured Michigan’s first CFP title and first national championship since 1997, all under the tutelage of head coach and “Michigan man” Jim Harbaugh.

“Glorious win. Could not be happier or prouder,” Harbaugh said. “Our team, 15-0. Took on all comers. Last one standing. It’s a great feeling, and just so happy for our players, for our parents, for their grandparents, our coaches (offensive coordinator) Sherrone Moore, (defensive coordinator) Jesse Minter, (running backs and assistant special teams coach) Jay Harbaugh, the coordinators, the coaches, the staff just couldn’t have had a better game. Jesse Minter, I mean, A-plus-plus the whole way. And for me, personally, I can now sit at the big person’s table in the family. They won’t keep me over there on the little table anymore. My dad Jack Harbaugh won a national championship and my brother won a Super Bowl so it’s good to be at the big person table from now on.”

READ: Former Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins commits to Ohio State

Michigan jumped out to a 17-7 lead after running back Donovan Edwards scored two 40-plus yard rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

Washington answered back in the second quarter when Michael Penix Jr. Connected with receiver Jalen McMillan on a 3-yard touchdown bringing the score to 17-10 at halftime.

But the Wolverines held the Huskies to 141 yards in the second half and forced two turnovers to outscore Washington 17-3 in the third and fourth quarters.

It didn’t come easily for the Wolverines. They punted on three-straight drives in the second half while Washington trailed behind 20-13.

“We started off really hot, everything was clicking, but I feel like we got to points in the games where we were beating ourselves,” Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy said. “I was missing throws. I was missing some reads, and it just comes down to moving on to the next play, flushing the last play and just staying in the present moment and just trying to attack one play at a time.”

VIEW: Watch: Michigan RB Blake Corum gives Wolverines insurance, scores 12-yard TD

McCarthy went 10-of-18 for 140 yards, and it was completely Michigan’s running attack and defense that helped seal the Wolverines’ national title.

The Wolverines ran for a season-high 303 yards, including 209 in the first half, while they became the first team with two 100-plus yard rushers in a CFP National Championship.

VIEW: Watch: No. 2 Washington answers back, Michael Penix Jr. finds Jalen McMillan for 3-yard TD

Blake Corum led Michigan with 134 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He said Michigan manifested its national championship ever since it lost to TCU in the CFP semifinals for a second-straight year in 2022.

“For me, when we all decided to come back, we knew what it took to get here, right? And when we all said we’re coming back and the guys that had no other choice but to come back, we had to pay attention to details, and our strength coach actually hit on it (Sunday night) when he was talking to us,” Corum said. “But it’s the little things, the details and the details, and we really locked in on those details all the way back to winter workouts, summer workouts. We were always just trying to execute at a high level and pay attention to detail. I think that’s what separated us a lot.”

VIEW: Watch: Donovan Edwards scores 2nd touchdown on 46-yard run to keep No. 1 Michigan ahead in College Football Playoff National Championship

Now that Harbaugh gets to sit at “the big person’s table” in his family, the Wolverines also secured a special place in history.

Harbaugh and Michigan underwent a season full of controversy. Harbaugh served a self-imposed three-game suspension to start the season due to recruiting violations and he also was suspended the final three games of the regular season by the Big Ten Conference after its investigation into in-person scouting led by former staff member Connor Stalions.

Harbaugh had been tight-lipped about the ongoing investigations into Michigan’s program throughout the season. He focused on the “one-track mind” and preached it all season long, and now that the season is over, Harbaugh shed a little light.

“It couldn’t have gone better. It went exactly how we wanted it to go to win every game,” Harbaugh said. “Off the field issues, we’re innocent. And we stood strong and tall because we knew we’re innocent. And I’d just like to point that out. And these guys, these guys are innocent. And yeah, (to) overcome that wasn’t that hard because we knew we were innocent.”

VIEW: Watch: Michigan’s Donovan Edwards scores 41-yard TD to start CFP National Championship

Whether Michigan holds onto its national championship remains to be seen. Speculation has swirled regarding the ongoing NCAA investigation into in-person scouting that the Wolverines could vacate their 2023 season.

But that all remains speculation. For now, though, Michigan is on top of the college football world, and it doesn’t plan on stopping here.

“It takes a lot more than just being a football player to be a Michigan man, and everything that — the rigorous school, schedule, the rigorous football schedule just forces us into these Michigan men and couldn’t be in a better spot,” McCarthy said.

Michigan has played through a season of turmoil.

The Wolverines’ head coach has been suspended for six of the 12 regular-season games this season. The team competed in what many considered a weaker nonconference schedule and emerged undefeated entering Saturday when No. 2 Ohio State stepped up to the challenge in “The Game.”

Interim head coach Sherrone Moore has handled the critics and outside noise, managing the Wolverines to a 3-0 record in his time at the helm and through a 30-24 victory over the Buckeyes.

“The biggest thing is we just try to focus on what we’re working on, keeping the main thing the main thing that as our guys say, not looking too far into the future, not looking at the past and doing what we can every single day just to get better and attack that moment,” Moore said. “So not trying to look at the outside world and what people were saying. We know what we have in that building, and staying together as a group is the most important thing for us.”

PODCAST: Week 13 Preview: Rivalry Week is here

Michigan dominated the trenches and kept Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord off balance. McCord went 18-of-30 for 271 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Moore credited the Wolverines for beating the Buckeyes for a third-staight season. He said this year is much different than the past two.

“The players, the way they practice, the way they did in this game, is something we prepare for 365,” Moore said. “It’s not a one-week affair. It’s not something we just dropped that week. So it’s something that’s planned out very strategically.”

Junior defensive back Rod Moore had the game-sealing interception with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

McCord dropped back to pass and ranged a throw over the middle, and Rod Moore came down with the pick and later said the game was “personal” to him.

“Just being from Ohio, just in a sense, like, the whole game is personal every year,” Rod Moore said. “It’s so personal to me, and I’ll say before the defense went out there, I told myself, you’re either going to make the play or somebody else is to seal the game and I told them upfront, they got to get to the quarterback for us.”

Michigan receiver Roman Wilson caught three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown.

After the game, Wilson questioned Ohio State’s toughness and whether the Buckeyes had more of it than the Wolverines.

“No, definitely not,” Wilson said. “I mean like I told our receivers this whole week, like, you got guys back there, like, there’s the thing that I thought too like guys who you want to put on like the Louis V, like the $1,000 outfit, like you want to act hard but when you’re out there like they’re not hard. Like I see the film, like, you’re not tough. Like I don’t think I’m the toughest guy in the world. But you know, I’m out there, I’m getting physical like I don’t think they wanted it like I wanted it.”

Michigan is on its way back to Indianapolis to play in the Big Ten Championship game for the third-straight year.

The Wolverines will get head coach Jim Harbaugh back on the sidelines in time for the postseason, and Sherrone Moore said they talked with their head coach postgame. He served a three-game suspension as a result of the Big Ten’s investigation into in-person scouting.

Now, Michigan controls its destiny, and just might get the job finished this season.

“The big thing he said to me was he loved me and do me, and I told him the same thing,” Sherrone Moore said. “I love him, and we got his back. So like I said in interviews, we got his back. We’ll do anything for him. Players will run through a wall for him, so would the coaches so we were just prepared to go win this game for him.”

There are still six unbeaten teams left in college football.

The top-five teams in the College Football Playoff rankings all earned their 11th wins of the season last Saturday. No. 4 Florida State had the highest margin of victory at 45 points against North Alabama, but it didn’t come without a cost.

PODCAST: Despite chalk at the top, week 12 had intrigue

Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis left the game in the first quarter with a horrific left leg injury. He announced on Monday that his college career is over while stating “the great memories created here at FSU will never fade.”

Here are some noteworthy quotes as focus turns from Week 12 to Week 13.

Ryan Day, Ohio State

The Buckeyes were without All-American linebacker Tommy Eichenberg last week against Minnesota.

Eichenberg missed a second-straight game as he dealt with an upper-body injury. He leads Ohio State with 73 tackles this season.

The Buckeyes took care of business against the Golden Gophers, defeating them 37-3 on Senior Day. Eichenberg, a graduate, tried his hardest to get into the game, but head coach Ryan Day said the decision to keep the linebacker out ultimately fell on him.

“We’ll get Tommy back for next week,” Day said. “Tommy was ready to play in this one and I had to pull him back, and it was almost a fistfight. But I won. It took some even, I mean, I’ll be honest, it took some late night texts last night. He wanted to play, and this is a guy who has put so much into this program. Coming back, and for senior day for him not to be out there was really hard for Tommy, really hard. But I just explained to him there’s just too much on the line moving forward to risk any kind of setback, that we need him at his best and he was, after some calming down, he was OK. But it was not easy for him to not play in this game, athat was my decision. He was ready to go. He pushed himself to get to a point but he’ll have another great week of practice and be at 100% going into next week.”

Jerry Kill, New Mexico State

New Mexico State marched onto Auburn’s home field and upset the Tigers 31-10, holding them without a touchdown in the second half.

It was the first time in Aggies program history that they defeated a team from the Southeastern Conference. They were paid around $1.7 million by Auburn to play them last Saturday.

READ: Stat Pack: Week 12

Aggies head coach Jerry Kill is in just his second season with the program. He has 11 years of experience as a skipper, taking stops at Northern Illinois, Minnesota and TCU before joining New Mexico State prior to the 2022 season.

The Aggies are 9-3 and will play in the Conference USA championship game Dec. 1 against undefeted Liberty. But until then, Kill and New Mexico State will enjoy its win over Auburn.

“We walked in — and I probably shouldn’t say it but you know, life’s short and I may not be here tomorrow, something I’ve always said — I walked in, I said, ‘Hey, we just got 1.7 million to play a southeast conference team,’ so how about that,” Kill said. “One-point-seven million and winning the game, and so the kids, they’re all fired up. They’re wondering when they’re going to get it. They want it to be all NIL money.”

Sherrone Moore, Michigan

The Wolverines became the first program in college football to reach 1,000 wins in program history with their 11th-straight at Maryland last Saturday.

They did it without head coach Jim Harbaugh, who accepted and served the second of a three-game suspension as a result of the Big Ten Conference’s investigation into in-person scouting. It’s also the fifth time Harbaugh has been suspended from a game this season.

READ: Syracuse fires head coach Babers

Michigan offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore served as acting head coach once again, and he said he wants Harbaugh edited into the postgame celebrations of the 1,000th win.

“First we need to edit coach in there. There’s enough technology in the world today that we can get that done so we can do that,” Moore said. “But I mean, just it’s historic to be a part of this university, this place, this team, so really cool just to be a part of it. Guys are just ecstatic to get that 100th win, but they all knew exactly what time it was right after that. They all know what’s ahead so I’m super excited for that challenge.”

Moments after No. 3 Michigan topped No. 10 Penn State 24-15 on Saturday, Wolverines acting head coach Sherrone Moore had a postgame interview with FOX’s Jenny Taft.

The Wolverines were without Jim Harbaugh, who served the first of a three-game suspension as a result of the Big Ten Conference’s discipline of the Wolverines program for in-person, advanced scouting. Moore was emotional after the victory.

“I want to thank the Lord,” Moore said. “I want to thank coach Harbaugh. I f—ing love you, man. I love the s— out of you, man. We did this for you, for this university, the president, our AD. We got the best players, best university, best alumni in the country. Love you guys. These f—ing guys right here. These guys right here man. These guys did it. These guys did it man.”

PODCAST: November crowns champions and who will step up in week 11?

Moore and the Wolverines rolled to 10-0 amid a season in which investigations and suspensions have loomed over the team.

So when Moore had an opportunity to talk up the Michigan program and the state of the Wolverines, he took it.

“I’m a pretty calm guy but there’s a lot of emotions,” Moore said. “Being here six years, I feel like this place is home. What coach Harbaugh has done for me just giving me the opportunity to be here and this whole university and these players, these fans, I mean, this place is like home to me. Home to my family. So it’s very deep, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I work extremely hard as we all do so that meant a lot for us to get this win in this situation. To show that and make it about players, the players are — we have elite players, elite university, and just so happy for them.”

In the days and weeks leading up to the Big Ten’s announced suspension of Harbaugh following in-person scouting, Michigan supporters asked conference commissioner Tony Petitti for due process in investigating the Wolverines program.

Michigan university president Santa Ono wrote a letter last week to Petitti encouraging due process. After Harbaugh’s suspension was announced, athletics director Warde Manuel released a statement Saturday criticizing the Big Ten and NCAA.

Playing without Harbaugh, Moore said the message rang a similar tune as usual to the Wolverines players.

“Play for yourselves, play for the team and play for Michigan. That’s the constant message,” Moore said. “We did make it about him. Just play for everybody that you’ve always played for. Think about this game as you’re in the backyard with the boys, with your friends, and you’re just going to have to win. This was a tournament game for us, a playoff game for us, so we knew we had to do whatever we needed to do to win. So it’s been a crazy 24 hours but at the same time our team is built for this. Our staff is built for this, and we’re all built for it.”

READ: Big Ten issues penalty to Michigan after violation of sportsmanship policy over in-person scouting

Michigan beat Penn State on the ground, rushing for 227 yards which are the most allowed by the Nittany Lions this season.

Running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards each had a rushing touchdown, and the former had two, while the team carried the rock for 4.9 yards per run.

“We got two of the best backs in the country so at the end of the day we do whatever it takes to win,” Moore said. “Sometimes it’s throwing more, sometimes it’s punting more, and we’re going to do whatever we can in that game to win. We thought as we got into the game obviously the run game became priority, and I think our guys up front really asserted themselves to be dominant and those backs ran super hard so I was really excited about that.”

The Wolverines FaceTimed Harbaugh after the victory. Moore said Harbaugh “always alluded to” him potentially serving as acting head coach if a suspension was announced in the week leading up to the Penn State game.

Moore said he leaned on defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and running backs coach Mike Hart among members of the coaching staff against the Nittany Lions. Amid tumultuous times for the Michigan program, the Wolverines led themselves to a top-10 win despite the news.

“They were ready. It’s crazy,” Moore said. “This team is different. They’re built very different, and we let them know that coach wasn’t going to be there. And they knew that there was possibly that he wasn’t, and then when we told them here, they were ready to go. They didn’t flinch.”
