The 2024 NFL Draft is complete through all 257 picks.

Over 700,000 fans attended the draft this week in Detroit according to The Associated Press via NFL.com, a record-breaking number topping the previous best set in Nashville in 2019.

Like the previous two, offensive players began the third day of the NFL Draft with Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders going No. 101 overall to the Carolina Panthers and Troy Franklin reuniting with Oregon quarterback Bo Nix at No. 102 overall to the Denver Broncos.

Spencer Rattler, Jordan Travis become first QBs taken since Round 1

More than 100 picks went between the six taken in the first round on Thursday, which already set a record for most quarterbacks taken in the opening round of the draft.

Former South Carolina and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler broke the streak in round four when he went No. 150 overall to the New Orleans Saints.

Rattler leaves South Carolina as the all-time leader in completion percentage with 67.5% completion.

Former Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was chosen No. 171 overall in the fifth round by the New York Jets. He later would be paired with wide receiver teammate Johnny Wilson when the Jets picked him in the sixth round.

Travis finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting last season despite suffering a season-ending broken leg in the second-to-last regular season game.

Alabama’s Jaylen Key is Mr. Irrelevant

Every year, the final pick of the draft is regarded as “Mr. Irrelevant.” It’s so widely recognized as a special selection that “Irrelevant Week” is an annual celebration that honors that last player picked in the draft recognized by the NFL, according to MrIrrelevant.org.

Alabama defensive back Jaylen Key is this draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” as he was chosen No. 257 overall in the seventh round by the New York Jets.

Key played last season with the Crimson Tide after spending the previous four years with Alabama at Birmingham. He started 12 games at Alabama and made 60 tackles, one pass break-up and an interception.

Key earned an honorable mention nod in 2022 with the All-Conference USA team. He had three interceptions for the Blazers that season, tying for the team lead.

There are two ranked matchups this week, and perhaps none bigger than one taking place in the Pac-12 Conference.

No. 8 Oregon will meet No. 13 Utah on the road, and the Ducks are looking to build on their 38-24 win over Washington State which served as a bounce-back measure after falling in a top-10 bout with Washington.

PODCAST: Do we have any more clarity after some major week eight decisions?

There are also 12 ranked teams that will play on the road in addition to Oregon, and the group includes No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Florida State. No. 2 Michigan is on a bye.

Here are several games to watch this week.

No. 6 Oklahoma at Kansas

The top team in the Big 12 Conference will hit the road and challenge one team looking to play spoiler to their undefeated season.

A 7-0 Oklahoma squad is set for its third road game of the season against the Jayhawks, who are doing a bit of searching after losing their second of three outings last week.

The Sooners avoided upset last week against UCF, defeating the Knights 31-29 after trailing 23-17 in the fourth quarter.

This week, they’ll face the No. 7 total offense in the Big 12 that averages 443.1 yards per game. Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean has taken over under center for Jalon Daniels, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Bean passed for 410 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions last week at Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is impressed with how dynamic Kansas’ offense can be, and he expects a number of ways the Jayhawks will attack Oklahoma’s defense, which is the No. 1 scoring defense in the Big 12 holding opposition to 16.1 points per game.

“There’s a lot going on from an eye candy standpoint,” Venables said. “One of the most explosive offenses, explosive runs and explosive passes in all of college football. And so again, we’ve got to do a great job of playing with discipline and gap integrity and then staying on top of everything, leveraging routes in the back end, so that they don’t have this great balance, and that’s the challenge of all of that.”

No. 8 Oregon at No. 13 Utah

This week’s premier matchup focuses on the Pac-12 and the stipulations behind the Oregon-Utah matchup.

Both teams enter with one loss in conference play already. They’re chasing Washington and USC in the standings, and both Oregon and Utah have proven worthy threats to the Pac-12 crown.

Oregon has the top scoring offense in the Pac-12 and leads in rushing offense behind an average of 226.9 yards per game. Receiver Troy Franklin is second in the conference with 109.7 receiving yards per game.

The Ducks defense is stout, too. They hold opponents to 312.6 yards per game.

“There is no weakness. They’re a complete team,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. “Big game in the conference picture. They’re a one-loss team as are we, so both our backs are to the wall and it should be a hopefully a great football game.”

READ: Reports: Army set to join AAC in 2024

Whittingham said he’s long been impressed with the way Oregon quarterback Bo Nix plays, particularly with “the way he just leads and competes every week.”

“He’s a tremendous player,” Whittingham said. “But the thing I like about him most is his competitiveness and his leadership, and I saw that at Auburn. I saw him play one game at Auburn. I was watching an SEC game a couple of, what was it, three years ago I guess now in the ’21 season, and saw this guy. I thought, ‘Who is that guy? He’s just making plays and just an absolute field general of the team and it was him and so I’ve had a strong opinion of how good he is for several years.”

No. 20 Duke at No. 18 Louisville

In a matchup between two teams looking to bounce back from losses, there are plenty of Atlantic Coast Conference championship implications between Duke and Louisville this week.

North Carolina suffered its first loss of the season last week to unranked Virginia, and the Tar Heels currently are tied for second in the ACC with Louisville. Duke sits tied for fourth place.

Louisville boasts the No. 4 scoring offense in the ACC behind an average of 34.1 points per game, while Duke holds the top scoring defense in the conference holding opponents to 13.9 points per game.

The Blue Devils are searching for a win amid their quarterback dealing with injury. Riley Leonard suffered a shoulder injury against Notre Dame in September, and he played last week against the Seminoles going 7-for-16 with 69 pass yards and an interception.

READ: Big Board: Week 9

Duke is also looking to get back in the win column after losing its second game in its past three contests. Head coach Mike Elko said he’s not concerned with the way the Blue Devils have handled themselves in defeat.

“The one thing I don’t question about this group is response,” Elko said. “We’re wired in a really good way right now in that locker room because those kids understand that they’ve got a very small window to represent Duke football and they want to try to take advantage of it as best they can, so I’m not worried about our response. I’m more worried about can we stop this Louisville offense and can we make enough plays on our side to win the football game.”

Moments after No. 7 Washington defeated the Ducks and fans swarmed Husky Stadium, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was led off the field with a security guard.

Penix, swarmed by fans and Huskies supporters from all corners of the field, took in the moment that came after a top-10 victory at home.

“Whoever the security guard was, man, he did amazing,” Penix said. “I’m sorry for some of the people that got shoved out of the way but like, it was just a blessing. I was just excited, and as much as I did want to celebrate with the fans, like you said, it was very hectic out there, but in a good way, in a good way, and I’m just super blessed to be in the position I’m in today.”

PODCAST: Top games, bounce backs and more in a busy week seven

Saturday was the first time Washington and Oregon faced one another in a top-10 setting, and Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer felt it ranks high in his books.

“If there’s one that I’ve been a part of that was bigger, better, I can’t think of it right now,” DeBoer said.

Penix led the Huskies on a fourth quarter comeback over No. 8 Oregon, taking advantage of a key stop on fourth down.

With 2:11 left to play and his team trailing 33-29, Penix dialed up two plays to his wide receivers, and they were enough to will the team into the end zone and toward the win.

All of it came after Washington could’ve put the game away earlier after missing a 4th and 1 at Oregon’s 1-yard line.

“We got a team full of dogs, man, just guys that’s going to compete all the way to the end, and that’s what it was all about,” Penix said. “The whole time on the sideline, once we didn’t get that fourth down down there, we already knew. We was talking to ourselves like, ‘Hey, we’re going get the ball back. We just got to go down there and execute at a high level and we’re going to come up with the win,’ and that’s what we was able to do.”

Oregon’s man coverage wasn’t enough to stop the arm of Penix, who entered the day leading the NCAA in total offense averaging over 400 yards per game by himself.

READ: Big Board: Week 7

Penix found receiver Ja’Lynn Polk for 35 yards into Oregon territory, then connected with Rome Odunze on the 18-yard touchdown reception that turned out to be the game-winning score.

“Just man on man, and my guy versus their guy. I’m going to take my guy every time,” Penix said. “Rome shows each and every day why he’s top receiver in the nation. He knew that I was going to trust him, and I gave him that fade route and we made it happen. That’s stuff we do all the time in practice. Every game y’all see it so I trusted it and I just made the play and he made the play, really.”

The Ducks and Huskies were back and forth all afternoon.

Washington took a 22-18 lead into halftime after Oregon made a two-point conversion on its first touchdown of the first half. The Huskies had outgained the Ducks 260 yards to 231, but later were outgained in the game 541 to 415.

The Huskies had a lead as large as 29-18 with more than 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, but then they fell scoreless until the final two minutes of the game.

This allowed Oregon and quarterback Bo Nix, who threw a pair of touchdowns, to take a 29-26 lead after Nix found receiver Troy Franklin 30 yards down the field for a score.

“We felt like at times we were beating ourselves,” Penix said. “We allowed the game to be closer than what we wanted it to, but at the end of the day, like I said, they’re a good team and we’re a good team, and we know that rivalry games it comes down to the wire most of the time so we were just prepared to go out there and attack each and every play.”

PODCAST: Kirby Smart is Right for Not Caring

Penix dealt with nagging cramps in the fourth quarter, he said, and it even required him to take a trip to the medical tent.

But cramps denied, and a long time after two ACL injuries from his playing days at Indiana, and Penix was determined to lead Washington back ahead and victorious.

“This is Michael,” DeBoer said. “He’s just been through it for so many years and I mean, there’s no way you’re pulling him off the field in that moment. I mean, he’s out there in the fourth quarter and we circle around him, and it’s a lot of energy to get out there and just really let it all out and talk to the whole team. And you know, who’s in the middle? It’s Michael, and so the production, the talent, all that, I mean, that’s one thing, but the heart that he’s got and the guts he’s got and the willingness to just grind through it, grit, I mean, there’s not enough words to describe how I feel about him and I think our whole team would echo that for sure.”

Penix finished with 302 passing yards and four touchdowns. His lone interception came late in the second quarter.

His performance through the first six weeks of the season had been enough to keep Penix in the Heisman Trophy conversation. Penix’s performance on Saturday, though, may’ve made him a frontrunner.

“I’m just going to continue to keep my head down and keep going,” Penix said. “This is not the end.”

Michael Penix Jr. might’ve had his Heisman moment on Saturday.

With 2:11 left, Bo Nix and the No. 8 Ducks faced 4th and 3 at Washington’s 46-yard line. Nix dropped back to pass and maneuvered a few steps before throwing an incomplete pass to the left side.

Washington football.

Penix took advantage of the field position and fired a 35-yard heave to receiver Ja’Lynn Polk setting the No. 7 Huskies up at Oregon’s 18-yard line.

On the next play, Penix found receiver Rome Odunze on an 18-yard pass to give Washington the lead 36-33.

PODCAST: Top games, bounce backs and more in a busy week seven – Saturday Glory

It was enough to hold off Oregon’s final effort, as the Ducks advanced to Washington’s 25-yard line before Oregon kicker Camden Lewis missed a field goal try from 43 yards out.

With 9:15 left, Penix converted a key 4th and 6 on an 8-yard pass to receiver Giles Jackson to move the chains to the Oregon 8-yard line.

But then, Oregon’s defense came up big.

Washington running back Dillon Johnson ran seven yards to the 1-yard line setting up 2nd and goal. The Ducks stuffed Johnson for a loss of one yard on the next play.

On 3rd and goal, Washington again turned to Johnson who again was stopped near the line of scrimmage, and the Huskies had a fourth-down situation on their hands.

Washington’s Tybo Rogers took the football on fourth and goal, and Oregon’s defense led by Steve Stephens IV and Taki Taimani brought Rogers down for a loss and effectively held the lead 33-29 with 6:33 remaining.

Oregon faced a 3rd a 4 situation with less than four minutes remaining, and Nix lofted a 25-yard pass that was originally ruled incomplete to receiver Troy Franklin. It was the second third down that the Ducks converted on their 10-play, 51-yard drive that led to Washington taking over near midfield.

Oregon outgained Washington 541 yards to 415. The Huskies scored in three of their four red zone trips while the Ducks went three for five.

Penix finished with 302 passing yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Odunze and Polk each totaled over 100 receiving yards and had 128 and 118, respectively.

Nix completed 75% of his passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns.

Football is a game of yards.

And one yard was all No. 4 Ohio State needed to outlast No. 11 Notre Dame 17-14 on Saturday night. It was one of six ranked matchups on the docket in Week 4, and the better seed prevailed in all but one.

READ: Ohio State climbs to No. 4, Fresno State enters latest AP Top 25 Poll

No. 16 Washington State upset Oregon State 38-35 in a high scoring affair. Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward threw 404 passing yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington State to its fourth win of the season.

No. 1 Georgia once again took care of business, extending its winning streak to 21 games in a 49-21 victory over UAB. Quarterback Carson Beck tossed 338 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ victory.

Here are some of the top statistical performances from Week 2.

Troy Franklin, Oregon

Franklin had a hand in halting the Colorado hype train, as No. 9 Oregon defeated the Buffaloes 42-6 and had a 35-0 halftime lead.

Franklin got the job done through the air. He was one of 10 Ducks to get a catch in the win over Colorado.

Leading the receivers in the game was Franklin, who caught 126 yards on an impressive eight catches. He averaged 15.8 yards per reception.

He also hauled in a pair of scores to lead Oregon backs behind Bo Nix’s three touchdown passes. Both Franklin’s touchdowns came in the second quarter on 16- and 36-yard receptions.

Nix had a solid outing, completing nearly 85% of his passes for 276 yards.

Ashton Jeanty, Boise State

A career day on the ground for Jeanty helped Boise State begin its Mountain West slate with a win.

Jeanty rushed for 205 yards on the day against San Diego State, averaging almost nine yards on each of his 23 carries.

Boise State didn’t get out to the best of starts. The Broncos had just 26 yards in the opening quarter before turning on the jets for 17 points in the second quarter.

Jeanty played a large role in igniting the Broncos offense. He broke off a 58-yard touchdown carry with 9:08 left to play in the first half finding space through the middle.

Later in the second quarter Jeanty made way on a 36-yard rush that set up Boise State across midfield at the San Diego State 36-yard line. The drive ended with a 29-yard field goal.

Jeanty’s second touchdown came on a 6-yard push that put Boise state ahead 34-24. He also added four catches for 49 yards and accounted for 12 of the team’s 19 first downs.

Jeanty is the first Broncos running back to rush for at least 200 yards since Alexander Mattison in 2018, and his production on the ground is the most from a Mountain West player so far this season.

Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk, Washington

A pair of Washington receivers are next in this week’s Stat Pack, and both had over 100 yards receiving in the win over Cal.

Odunze is a projected Day 1 or Day 2 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, and he showed out with another big performance on Saturday. He delivered his fourth-consecutive 100-plus yard performance and added a few more touchdowns to his stat line.

Odunze wasn’t Washington’s leading receiver as Polk totaled 127 receiving yards to Odunze’s 125. The pair combined for 13 catches, 252 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Polk had touchdown scores of 8 and 24 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively, while Odunze found the end zone on touchdowns of 35 and 13 yards.

Receiving wasn’t all for Odunze, however. He returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes of the first quarter, the first of his career.

Jack Plummer, Louisville

While Michael Penix Jr. is busy guiding the Huskies to a 4-0 start, a fellow transfer quarterback was doing the same for Louisville.

Plummer followed head coach Jeff Brohm to the Cardinals program after the 2022 season following a year at Cal. The two are tasked with building on an 8-4 record from a year ago under predecessor Scott Satterfield and Deion Branch.

Plummer has done his job so far. He entered Saturday having reached 238 passing yards in each of his first three starts.

Plummer more than upped his totals this time around with a 388-yard performance against Boston College. He threw a 1-yard touchdown on Louisville’s first offensive drive of the game, and the Cardinals never looked back nor trailed against the Eagles.

A career-high five touchdown passes came from the game for Plummer. He found four different targets, including receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce twice, for touchdown scores, and Plummer completed his passes at a nifty 85.7%.

Naiem Simmons, South Florida

This week’s leading receiver put up video game-like stats in South Florida’s 42-29 win over Rice.

Simmons set new career-bests in a number of categories on Saturday. He caught a career-high eight passes for 272 yards and hauled in a touchdown.

Simmons’ big day came after catches of 53, 52, 51, 49 and 42 yards. His first three catches of the second half all went for at least 42 yards.

Simmons’ production broke the South Florida program record for receiving yards in a game, topping Tyre McCants’ previous best of 227 yards set in 2017.

The hype train came to a halt in Eugene, Oregon.

Bo Nix threw three touchdowns and the No. 10 Ducks raced past No. 19 Colorado 42-6 on Saturday, extending their start to 4-0 this season and handing the Buffaloes their first loss.

Nix and Oregon held a 35-0 halftime lead behind three touchdown passes and 378 total yards. The Ducks defense held Colorado to 21 yards in the first half.

The loss marks the first for Colorado under head coach Deion Sanders. Sanders and the Buffaloes got out to a 3-0 start, a turnaround for the program which finished 1-11 a year ago.

Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw his only touchdown pass of the game in the fourth quarter. He avoided a shutout and found receiver Michael Harrison six yards over the middle with 2:51 left in the game.
