Set to launch worldwide on July 19, a full reveal of the modes and features of EA Sports College Football 25 was announced on Friday.

Dynasty and Road To Glory modes will be available in College Football 25, according to a release. Those two modes will allow players “to construct their own powerhouse program as a created coach or vie for the Heisman as a player” in what the video game introduces as CampusIQ, which will be “a suite of features that brings to life the true depth of college football through wide open, fast-paced gameplay across all 134 FBS schools in all areas of the game.”

Over 10,000 players have opted into College Football 25, it was announced in March. Any student-athlete who opts in and has their name, image and likeness used will receive $600 and a copy of the video game.

College Football 25 will also offer “the all-new Road to the College Football Playoff and College Football Ultimate Team” that will “bring fresh online experiences and ways to play.”

“EA SPORTS College Football is BACK! We’ve felt the passion and anticipation of college football fans every step of the way since we first announced this game, and we’re ecstatic to finally be able to show everyone what we’ve been building,” EA Sports SVP and Group GM Daryl Holt stated in a release. “College Football 25 is built with authenticity at its core, inspired by experiences our fans have loved from our games, and fully evolved to reflect modern college football – all of which will immerse them in the sights, sounds, and true-to-life gameplay of the sport they love.”

EA Sports unveiled the cover of College Football 25 on Thursday, showcasing Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and Colorado defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter. They will star on the covers of the Standard and Deluxe editions.

“Donovan, Quinn and Travis are extraordinary talents who impressed and entertained millions of college football fans on the field last season and are poised to do so again this year,” Holt stated in a release. “We’re proud to be able to incorporate thousands of current athletes in College Football 25, and featuring this trio of playmakers and their iconic college programs on the cover is a perfect fit as we usher in a new era for EA SPORTS and college football. I can’t wait for the world to learn more about the game tomorrow.”

ESPN broadcasters such as Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will “call marquee matchups,” along with other broadcast teams such as Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and David Pollack will comprise the virtual booth and “take the mic for all other games.”

Among the gameplay features include Homefield Advantage, which will allow players to “through distractions like screen shaking, missing pre-play icons, and moving play art.” Additional features consist of Pre-Snap Recognition and the Wear & Tear System, which means virtual player stamina is affected by more play so it will be important to “manage your players’ health, limit fatigue, assess risk of injury, and avoid on-field mistakes by using strategic substitutions to ensure your players are at their best when it counts the most.”

The traditions within college football that make it one of a kind will be immersed in College Football 25. Along with team mascots and fight songs, the video game will include “unique team run-outs, rivalry rituals, synchronized crowd-chants, loudness meters as well as real game-day audio.”

Dynasty and Road To Glory modes are also offered in the video game alongside Road to the College Football Playoff, where players will “experience a new way to play competitively across consoles” and “earn rank by upsetting the toughest opponents and securing the votes you need to progress and level up divisions,” as well as College Football Ultimate Team.

College Football Ultimate Team will allow players to “build your dream team of college football stars and legends” in Solo Challenges or H2H seasons, and they can test their skill across consoles “in more competitive formats like College Football Ultimate Team Champs and Champs Gauntlet.”

EA Sports College Football 25 is available for pre-order now. According to Matt Brown of Extra Points, the video game will not be available for PC at launch. EA Sports is also offering an MVP bundle on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that will include deluxe editions of College Football 25 and Madden NFL 25 “with 3-day early access and unlocks a multitude of benefits across both titles.”

Like the previous two, offensive players began the third day of the NFL Draft with Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders going No. 101 overall to the Carolina Panthers and Troy Franklin reuniting with Oregon quarterback Bo Nix at No. 102 overall to the Denver Broncos.

Spencer Rattler, Jordan Travis become first QBs taken since Round 1

More than 100 picks went between the six taken in the first round on Thursday, which already set a record for most quarterbacks taken in the opening round of the draft.

Former South Carolina and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler broke the streak in round four when he went No. 150 overall to the New Orleans Saints. 

Rattler leaves South Carolina as the all-time leader in completion percentage with 67.5% completion.

Former Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was chosen No. 171 overall in the fifth round by the New York Jets. He later would be paired with wide receiver teammate Johnny Wilson when the Jets picked him in the sixth round.

Travis finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting last season despite suffering a season-ending broken leg in the second-to-last regular season game.

Alabama’s Jaylen Key is Mr. Irrelevant

Every year, the final pick of the draft is regarded as “Mr. Irrelevant.” It’s so widely recognized as a special selection that “Irrelevant Week” is an annual celebration that honors that last player picked in the draft recognized by the NFL, according to MrIrrelevant.org.

Alabama defensive back Jaylen Key is this draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” as he was chosen No. 257 overall in the seventh round by the New York Jets.

Key played last season with the Crimson Tide after spending the previous four years with Alabama at Birmingham. He started 12 games at Alabama and made 60 tackles, one pass break-up and an interception.

Key earned an honorable mention nod in 2022 with the All-Conference USA team. He had three interceptions for the Blazers that season, tying for the team lead.

According to Ralph D. Russo of The Associated Press, “Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III ruled that the ACC sufficiently argued it had followed conference procedures in filing suit in December against Florida State” on Thursday and the state of North Carolina “is the appropriate jurisdiction for the dispute.”

The ruling came two weeks “after a hearing in Mecklenburg County,” according to the AP.

The ACC filed a lawsuit in December 2023 against Florida State alleging the member program violated the Grant of Rights between it and the conference and for breaching contract. It listed other reasons in an amended complaint. 

Florida State is considering leaving the ACC over revenue distribution. At one point, the Seminoles “very seriously” weighed departing the conference during a board of trustees meeting in August 2023.

Conference realignment has been a big reason why many leagues within college athletics are in a seemingly constant state of evolution. There are teams moving conferences ahead of next football season, and the ACC will welcome Cal, SMU and Stanford.

Florida State is not the only ACC program with a lawsuit against the conference. According to David Hale of ESPN, Clemson filed a lawsuit against the ACC “arguing that the grant of rights should not apply should the school choose to leave the ACC and that the league’s requirement that any departing teams also pay an exit fee of three times annual revenue was excessive.”

The ACC stated it will “remain committed to acting in the best interests of the league’s members and will see this process through to protect and advance the ACC,” according to the AP.

In response to the denial of its request to dismiss the ACC’s lawsuit, Florida State stated it was “disappointed” in the decision, according to the AP.

According to the AP, Florida State says the total cost to leave the ACC is estimated to be $572 million.

According to The Associated Press, Oregon State and Washington State came to an agreement “in principal late last year” with the group of departing Pac-12 teams: Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, Utah, UCLA, USC and Washington.

Each of the 10 outgoing teams “will have $5 million withheld during the 2024 fiscal year for a total of $50 million under the deal” and “also will pay a $1.5 million ‘supplemental contribution’ to the conference that will be used by the remaining schools to navigate an uncertain future,” according to the AP. This totals to $65 million during the 2024 fiscal year.

According to the AP, after this year the outgoing Pac-12 schools won’t receive any revenue generated and “will have no ‘vote, direction input or other power with the conference’s use, allocation of expenditure of the supplemental contribution.'”

“We are pleased to finalize an agreement with OSU and WSU that provides support for all our student-athletes while ensuring an equal distribution of the vast majority of funds earned by all 12 schools during the 2023-24 academic year,” the 10 programs departing the Pac-12 stated via The Associated Press. “Under this agreement, our schools will have the right to vote on matters that affect all 12 schools this year, while OSU and WSU will have control over future Conference revenue and decisions.”

Oregon State and Washington State will schedule its contests accordingly with the Mountain West Conference, which the two schools will join in every sport except baseball and football beginning next season.

There were talks previously about the Pac-12 “merging” with the Mountain West in the fallout from conference realignment.

College football players around the country shared on social media Thursday their participation in the upcoming EA Sports video game “College Football 25.”

EA Sports confirmed Thursday that all 134 Football Bowl Subdivision teams will be available to play in the new game.

More information about the game will be available in May, according to a release.

Players such as Michigan’s Will Johnson and Ohio State transfer Quinshon Judkins posted on X a graphic designed in their team’s colors promoting the video game.

ESPN broadcasters such as Rece Davis and Kirk Herbstreit shared posts confirming they’ll also appear as “one of the voices” of the game. Herbstreit posted “I’m so excited to FINALLY announce that I’m part of @EASPORTSCollege. I’m proud to be a partner and one of the voices of the game once again – my 14th year in that role.”

According to Michael Rothstein of ESPN, any player who opts in and has their name, image and likeness used in the game will receive at least $600 and a copy of “College Football 25.”

Additional opportunities such as advertisements, promotion, social media posts and other avenues will be available for players to have a chance to make more, according to ESPN.

No Football Championship Subdivision school will be available to play when the game launches, according to ESPN.

If a player doesn’t opt into the “College Football 25” video game, then “a generic avatar based on the traditional strength or weakness of a position over the past decade for that school” will be created by EA Sports, according to ESPN.

According to Ryan Kryska of The Associated Press, users who could create and add players of real-life college football players who did not opt into the “College Football 25” video game will be blocked from doing so.

Kliavkoff has served as Pac-12 commissioner since July 2021.

“More details about new leadership of the Pac-12 will be announced next week,” the Pac-12 Board of Directors stated in a release.

According to Sean Leahy and Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports, Pac-12 deputy commissioner Teresa Gould “is expected to take over” upon Kliavkoff’s last day.

Kliavkoff’s tenure as Pac-12 commissioner will come to an end following historic change in the conference realignment landscape.

Beginning his term with 12 teams, Kliavkoff saw 10 Pac-12 programs plan to depart the conference. Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington will move to the Big Ten, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will enter the Big 12 and Cal and Stanford are bound for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Oregon State and Washington State remain as the Pac-12’s lone members.

The conference has until fall 2026 to reach the eight-school minimum to be recognized by the NCAA as a Football Bowl Subdivision conference, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The NFL announced Tuesday that 321 players were invited to the Combine taking place Feb. 26-March 4.

Seventy-nine teams will be represented at the Combine this year.

Michigan had a Combine-record 18 players invited this year. Among the Wolverines who were invited include quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and defensive lineman Kris Jenkins.

Heisman Trophy-winning LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will be among the gunslingers taking part in drills. Fellow Heisman finalists Marvin Harrison Jr., Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. will also be in attendance at the Combine, as well as 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee released its final rankings of the season on Sunday, and they delivered a Playoff feature No. 1 Michigan battling No. 4 Alabama in the Rose Bowl and No. 2 Washington taking on No. 3 Texas in the Sugar Bowl.

As non-Playoff teams were selected into other bowl games, matchups began to take shape all across the Power 5 conferences. 

Each of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences will take part in bowl season. The ACC leads the way with 11 bowl games. 

The Big 12 is close behind at 10 bowl games, while the Big Ten has nine and the Pac-12 and SEC both have eight.

The Ducks fell for the only time this season to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies 36-33, and had to trail behind them in the College Football Playoff rankings all season.

PODCAST: Week 13 almost had all-out chaos

Friday presents a different scenario. Oregon and No. 3 Washington will meet again in the Pac-12 Championship game — with a spot in the CFP likely clinched after a win.

“I think you pull experience from every experience that you’ve had in your life, but that’s certainly one that is similar in a standpoint of you get to play the game,” Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said. “Every time you go out there and play the game, there’s an opportunity for it to go one way or another, and we’re certainly going to use the first game as a place to look at where could we have improved and attack a lot of those places, and then try to figure out where their strengths are where we can attack those as well.”

The Ducks have won six-straight games since the loss to Washington. They’ve won each game by at least nine points and scored at least 31 in all.

Oregon has been keyed largely by a late-season push by quarterback Bo Nix. The fifth-year from Pinson, Alabama, has played well down the stretch, accounting for 19 touchdowns in his last four games.

“I think the preparation has been really good,” Nix said. “I think we’ve been practicing at a high level, and then I just think I’ve hit a really good rhythm at the right time. And all week or all year, we’ve been putting together something and we’ve been trying to be really accurate and really efficient with all of our throws, and when they’re open hitting them. And I feel like we’ve done a really good job of that here lately.”

Nix is a Heisman Trophy contender alongside Penix. The latter earned an early Heisman moment after Penix helped the Huskies with a three-play, game-winning drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze.

In his last four games, Nix has registered six touchdowns in two of those. He had four passing and two rushing scores against Cal in Week 10, then had six passing touchdowns at Arizona State in Week 12.

“Bo’s obviously an elite player and we’re still playing football. I think that speaks to the caliber of player that Bo is,” Lanning said. “The fact that we’re competing for a championship, leads the nation in passing. I don’t memorize all of Bo’s statistics, but just watch Bo play and watch how much of a difference he makes for us. But just as important of that award, what that is to Bo and our team, he’s more excited about getting to play in a championship game this weekend. And I think anybody who’s watched Bo Nix play, the caliber that he’s played, recognizes that he’s definitely deserves merit for that award.”

Nix is outperforming Penix and most other college football quarterbacks this season.

Nix leads the country with 3,906 passing yards. His 37 passing touchdowns are second to LSU’s Jayden Daniels, who has 40 and also beats Nix out with a higher passing efficiency rating.

But Nix completes passes at a higher rate than anyone. His 78.6% is tops in college football, and he’s eclipsed 82% in both of the past two games.

Perhaps no one has made a greater case for the Heisman in the past few weeks than Nix. He said he’s not focused on the award right now, though.

“It’s just staying off TV. Staying off social media has helped me a lot,” Nix said. “All I am around is the guys the locker room, the coaches and practice and meetings. I pretty much just stay up here all day and just get to work and prepare and make sure that at the end of the day when it’s a big moment, it’s not me who’s messing it up for the team. I just want to be as prepared as possible and I want to put our guys in the best situation to go out there and win the game.”

Nix and Oregon can play their way into the Playoff with a win over Washington and Pac-12 title.

Saturday’s game could be one for Nix’s Heisman profile, too, and he said the Ducks are game planning differently for a different outcome this time around.

“I just think that the whole I think operation as far as like making explosive plays and staying on the field on fourth downs and just getting those moments and making the most of them when they’re the big situational moments,” Nix said. “I think that’s where, ultimately, we lost last time. And I think we have been more prepared. Now, I think the season’s allowed us to play good situational football, but at the end, I think we’re ready to regroup and go out there and play again and not put ourselves in those situations.”

Here are several games to watch this week. 

New Mexico State vs. No. 24 Liberty 

Among the five remaining unbeaten teams left in college football, No. 24 Liberty has a chance to capture history on Friday. 

The Flames are 12-0 for the first time in program history, and they have a chance to win the Conference USA Championship in their first season in the conference. 

Liberty running back Quinton Cooley leads the Conference USA with 1,251 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s been a big reason why the Flames average 498.5 yards and 40.1 points per game. 

Cooley and Liberty already have one win over New Mexico State this season, coming in 33-17 fashion in Week 2. 

The Flames have found abundant success under first-year head coach Jamey Chadwell, who said Liberty’s success stems from its team chemistry. 

“I think one as we’ve gone on through the season, we’ve gotten to know our team better,” Chadwell said. “It’s our first year, and so early on in the season you’re trying to figure out what can we do, who can do it, when can we do it, and as you get along and get to know your team better, they get to know you better. And I think that’s why we’ve gotten better throughout the season because we’ve started to understand more the strengths of our players and how to interact with them and to get them to play at the highest level. And secondly, I think they’ve done a fantastic job, the players have done a fantastic job, of believing in each other and believing in what we’re doing. And each week, they’ve just built off the previous week and have not been satisfied and they’ve stayed hungry to continue to get better. And when you do that, good things can happen.” 

No. 5 Oregon vs. No. 3 Washington 

The top-10 rematch that many have been waiting for.

Both No. 3 Washington and No. 5 Oregon met in Week 6 in Seattle with the Huskies coming out on top 36-33. 

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. outdueled Oregon’s Bo Nix with 302 passing yards and four touchdowns to Nix’s 337 yards and two scoring throws. 

However, Nix may be heating up at the right time. 

Nix has been responsible for 19 touchdowns in his last four games, including a pair of six-touchdown performances against Cal and Arizona State. 

Penix, meanwhile, is trailing Nix closely behind in a number of passing categories. Nix and Penix are No. 1 and 2 in passing yards, and the former has 37 passing touchdowns to the latter’s 32. 

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is out for revenge. He said the sting of the loss to Washington earlier in the season is still there, and he thinks the Ducks will be ready. 

“We didn’t finish, didn’t win the game last time, so that’s the kind of thing that sticks with you,” Lanning said. “But our coaches have been working extremely hard as soon as our game was over with as far as getting prepped and so were our players so we’ve had some really good days of practice here so far.” 

No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 8 Alabama 

Perhaps the game with the biggest College Football Playoff implications will take place in Atlanta. 

No. 8 Alabama has been on the fringe of entering the CFP top-four ever since its loss to No. 7 Texas in Week 2. Since, the Crimson Tide have been on a 10-game winning streak.

No. 1 Georgia, however, is riding a 29-game winning streak that dates back to the 2021 SEC Championship game. The Bulldogs lost to Alabama that year in the conference title game, but still made the CFP and defeated Michigan and the Crimson Tide in the national championship. 

Georgia appears most likely to make the CFP with a loss, and if Alabama loses then it’s more likely the Crimson Tide will be eliminated from Playoff contention. 

Both Alabama and Georgia have first-year starting quarterbacks in the Bulldogs’ Carson Beck and Crimson Tide’s Jalen Milroe. 

The stakes are stacked together and couldn’t be higher, and Alabama head coach Nick Saban knows what’s on the line. 

“Having the opportunity to play in the SEC championship game is, you know, I’m very, very proud of this team for the progress that they’ve made, the work that they’ve done to give themselves an opportunity to play in the SEC championship game,” Saban said. “This is one of the most competitive, best venues in college football, and we’re obviously playing one of the best teams in college football, if not the best team in college football.”

The top-four went unchanged after the initial CFP rankings had No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Florida State all in their first ballot.

After the committee cast its second rankings, the top-four remained the same. Changes were made to the back end of the top-10, however, as Ole Miss rose to No. 9 and Penn State climbed to No. 10. 

Here are several players and notes to keep a tab on in this week’s Big Board. 

A look at the Southeastern Conference title picture 

As the conference championship season draws nearer, things in the SEC are shaping up to come down to the wire. 

Like last week, when the Big Board took a look at the Big 12 championship picture, the SEC has a lot of moving parts. 

Sitting atop the East Division is 9-0 Georgia which boasts a 6-0 conference record. The Bulldogs should have the division all but locked up, as a second-place tie between Missouri and Tennessee have them both 3-2 in conference play. 

On the other side of the conference in the West Division, things are a bit muddier. Alabama is currently is first place with a perfect 6-0 record. 

But right behind the Crimson Tide is 5-1 Ole Miss, which has a date with Georgia on Saturday. The Crimson Tide last week defeated LSU which is in third place in the West Division, so Alabama has a good grip on the division.

As things stand, it could come down to an Alabama-Georgia matchup in the SEC title game for the second time in three years. 

An update on the Michigan sign stealing investigation 

Every day there seems to be something new uncovered in the NCAA’s investigation into alleged sign stealing by the Michigan football program. 

Over the weekend, Connor Stalions, the subject of the sign stealing investigation and who purchased tickets to over 30 games over the past three seasons, resigned from the Michigan program, according to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. 

Last week, Big Ten athletics directors and coaches met with commissioner Tony Petitti to discuss the ongoing NCAA investigation. There was a sense of a change in tenor in the meetings focused on discipline of the Wolverines program. 

According to Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, “Michigan sent the Big Ten and NCAA documents it says show that Ohio State and Rutgers communicated the Wolverines’ signals to Purdue ahead of the 2022 Big Ten title game.” 

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN on Monday, “any action by the Big Ten in the Michigan sign stealing case for at least the next 48 hours” is unexpected. The Big Ten could take action under its sportsmanship policy, though “they’ll be a legal battle if there’s a punitive suspention by the Big Ten to Jim Harbaugh.” 

Bo Nix, Oregon 

There were plenty of touchdowns coming Bo Nix’s way last Saturday. 

The Oregon quarterback accounted for six touchdowns against Cal, throwing for four and rushing for two more. It set a career-high for the fifth-year gunslinger. 

Nix had touchdown passes of 48, 14, 7 and 4 yards, and he ran in scores from 1 yard out twice.

Oregon’s offense is firing on all cylinders under Nix and head coach Dan Lanning. The Ducks have the No. 1 scoring offense averaging 47.4 points per game and the No. 2 total offense averaging 538.7 yards per game behind LSU. 

The Ducks will face USC, Arizona State and Oregon State to round out the regular season over the next three weeks. They’re currently second in the Pac-12 standings and have a shot to make it to the conference title game. 

Nix’s current Heisman Trophy odds are +180, which are the second-best odds behind only Washington’s Michael Penix Jr.
