College Football Ultimate Team will allow players to “build your dream team of college football stars and legends” in Solo Challenges or H2H seasons, and they can test their skill across consoles “in more competitive formats like College Football Ultimate Team Champs and Champs Gauntlet.”

The American Athletic Conference announced Wednesday that Tim Pernetti will be its new commissioner.

Pernetti is the second commissioner in the history of the AAC. He’ll succeed Mike Aresco, who retired in December 2023.

READ: Memphis extends HC Ryan Silverfield through 2028

“It is truly an honor to be selected by the Chancellors and Presidents of the American Athletic Conference to serve as their commissioner at this important time in collegiate athletics that demands innovative leadership and consensus-driven change,” Pernetti stated in a release. “I am fired-up to work alongside our board, conference staff, athletics directors and coaches as we continue to transform the AAC into a bold collegiate conference enterprise that promotes world-class academic and athletic opportunities for our student-athletes through innovative resources, brand partnerships and emerging opportunities. I am ready to roll up my sleeves and, alongside our conference community, get to work.”

Pernetti will be his tenure in June, according to a release.

Among the places he’s worked include serving “as president of IMG Academy, executive vice president of the global sports and entertainment company, Endeavor, president of IMG College and executive vice president, content, CBS College Sports.”

Pernetti “oversaw a $100M capital expansion of IMG Academy” and “was part of the executive team that sold IMG Academy for $1.25B to EQT in 2023,” according to a release.

”Tim Pernetti is the ideal leader to guide the American Athletic Conference through this pivotal time in college athletics,” Chancellor of East Carolina University Philp Rogers stated in a release. “His perspective as a successful student-athlete, a respected and progressive director of athletics, and his demonstrated leadership, innovation, competitive spirit, and business acumen across a number of professional organizations make him uniquely suited to build on the success of Mike Aresco and steer the conference to a bright future.”

Pernetti also has experience as the director of intercollegiate athletics at Rutgers from 2009-13. He’s a Scarlet Knights alum who played on the football team.

At CBS College Sports from 2006-09, Pernetti was executive vice president, content, and senior vice president, programming and talent, for CSTV from 2003-06, according to a release.

He has also been involved in Major League Soccer. Pernetti was chief business officer for the New York City Football Club which launched in 2015.

Pernetti also spent five years at Endeavor “where he oversaw North American business development and growth management in sports, music, events, arts and exhibitions.”

“I have known Tim for a long time, and he is a superb choice to lead this conference,” Aresco stated in a release. “He has all the qualities and skills to advance the goals of the conference and take it to greater heights. I applaud the search committee, led by Philip Rogers, for its thoroughness and ability to deliver an outstanding new commissioner. I could not be more pleased for Tim and for the conference and look forward to making the transition as seamless as possible.”

San Jose State has hired former Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo for the same role, it announced Sunday.

Niumatalolo joins the Spartans program after he was named director of leadership at UCLA prior to last season.

READ: Reports: Caleb Downs to transfer to Ohio State

He succeeds former head coach Brent Brennan, who took the opening at Arizona in wake of Jedd Fisch’s departure for Washington.

“We are thrilled that Coach Niumatalolo has accepted the opportunity to lead our football program,” San Jose State athletics director Jeff Konya stated in a release. “He is a proven winner and brought the Naval Academy to unprecedented heights by winning eight or more games in nine seasons during his tenure. It’s impressive when you see that he had success against national brands like Notre Dame, Virginia, Kansas State and Pittsburgh, and even finished ranked inside the top 25 twice. We believe he is the right fit to build off the foundation laid here at San José State and will have the Spartans competing for Mountain West championships on a consistent basis.”

Niumatalolo is the all-time leader in wins at Navy where he went 109-83 over 15 seasons from 2007-22. The Midshipmen won six bowl games under Niumatalolo, a school record.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, San Jose State zeroed in on Niumatalolo who “is expected to target an offensive coordinator for some type of wide-open and pass-heavy system.”

Niumatalolo’s contract is a five-year agreement, according to Thamel.

American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco announced Thursday that he is retiring at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.

Aresco has served as the first and only president of the AAC in the conference’s 11-year history.

“It has been the supreme privilege of my long career in sports to have had the opportunity to lead this great conference from its reinvention in 2013, and to represent its outstanding student-athletes, coaches and administrators,” Aresco stated in a release. “I am grateful to the Board of Directors for giving me this opportunity to serve. It would take many pages to list this conference’s numerous athletic and academic accomplishments. There have also been some disappointments and difficulties along the way, most notably, the P5-G5 divide, realignment, College Football Playoff access for our deserving teams, and some competitive heartbreak in big games. But these have not affected in any way my enthusiasm in leading this terrific and resilient conference or my optimism for its long-term future. I would like to thank everyone associated with this conference for their significant contributions, and also my friends and colleagues in the college community, for their goodwill and concern for the greater good of the collegiate enterprise.”

READ: Big Board: Post-conference championship week

Aresco oversaw the reformation of the Big East Conference into the AAC in the early 2010s. He also helped the AAC secure two media rights agreements, one in 2014 and another in 2019, that serve as milestone moments for the conference.

Aresco also served on a number of College Football Playoff committees focusing on strategic planning, television, site selection and most recently a committee to select the next CFP executive director.

Aresco has overseen the recent rounds of conference realignment which impacted the moves for UCF, Cincinnati and Houston to the Big 12 Conference and Southern Methodist to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“Mike Aresco has been a strong, steady, and innovative commissioner for the American Athletic Conference since its inception,” East Carolina University Chancellor and Chair of The American’s Board of Directors Philip Rogers stated in a release. “We are all grateful for his distinguished service to the conference. There is no question that he will leave the AAC well-positioned for future success due to his strategic approach to navigating the complex landscape of intercollegiate athletics. More importantly, though, he led with deep character and integrity and we will miss him dearly in this role. My colleagues and I wish Mike and his family the very best in this new phase of life.”

The eighth week of the college football season is here.

There are four ranked matchups scheduled for Saturday when Week 8 commences, and it will be headlined by another top-10 matchup this time taking place in the Big Ten Conference.

PODCAST: The Shane Beamer Story Isn’t That Serious

Among the other contests on tap for Week 8 includes eight ranked teams playing on the road, including No. 2 Michigan traveling to Michigan State.

Here are several games to watch this week.

No. 22 Air Force at Navy

Air Force entered the Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the first time this season, checking in at No. 22 which is its highest ranking since the 2019 season.

A battle between service academies will take place on Saturday, as the Falcons travel to face Navy in a series that dates back to 1960. Both teams enter on winning streaks since the Midshipmen have won their last two games and the Falcons have won 11.

Air Force will be without its starting quarterback as Zac Larrier deals with injury, and head coach Troy Calhoun projects Larrier will be out “a while.”

Navy averages 20.3 points per game on 335 yards of total offense. The Midshipmen shut out Charlotte 14-0 in Week 7.

Calhoun said aside from the in-game competition, he looks forward to the march-ons of the service academies and pregame traditions.

“It’s always a big deal,” Calhoun said. “We came in the other day from pregame and you look all the way up that tunnel and you see all those cadets. It just moves you beyond football too, and again, just you have future service members that have made a commitment to do everything they can to make our country a better place, and I think that’s awesome. And I keep thinking at some point, I’d like to go watch one of these games also to see the flybys but hopefully that’s a ways out.”

No. 17 Duke at No. 4 Florida State

This Atlantic Coast Conference matchup should be a fun one.

The Blue Devils fell just short of an upset win over Notre Dame earlier in the season, dropping the game 21-14 and seeing quarterback Riley Leonard deal with ankle injury.

READ: Big Board: Week 8

Florida State, meanwhile, is out to its first 6-0 start since the 2015 season. The Seminoles are led by fifth-year quarterback Jordan Travis who is tied for second in the ACC with 13 passing touchdowns and fourth with a 154.1 passing efficiency rating.

Duke’s defense will present a challenge to the Seminoles, as the Blue Devils lead the ACC in total defense allowing 164.7 yards per game. It’s a tough enough team that stands out to Florida State head coach Mike Norvell.

“You watch film and you see really good players,” Norvell said. “They’ve done everything they needed to do. They were one play away in that Notre Dame game that you just, I mean, you kind of felt for them for how it all played out but I mean this is a very, very talented team and it’s one that you don’t need to give a motivational speech to any of our guys because they know the challenge that’s ahead and it’s going to take our best game and I’m looking forward to continuing the week of preparation.”

No. 7 Penn State at No. 3 Ohio State

This week’s top-10 bout will take place in Columbus, Ohio.

The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions are plenty familiar with one another, and Ohio State has won nine of the past 10 matchups.

This time around, the stakes are high and the competition will be up to the level of a top-10 game. Both teams enter near the top of the Big Ten in total offense and defense.

Penn State is No. 1 in total defense allowing 193.7 yards per game. That provides a dramatic challenge to the Buckeyes offense which tops the Big Ten at 443 yards per game.

READ: Quotables: Week 7

The battle will remain in the trenches as both teams offer dynamic run offenses, with the Nittany Lions atop the conference behind an average of 203.3 rushing yards per game to Ohio State’s 135, and the Buckeyes could be without running back TreVeyon Henderson due to injury.

A contest between two undefeated programs will take place at Ohio Stadium, and Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day said he hopes to see the fans in the stands early.

“I know I talked to Gene (Smith), about this, and one of the biggest things that he mentioned to me was getting everybody in the stadium early,” Day said. “We want to do that. We’ve done that in the past just to set the tone. But this is one of those games that we’ve got to really create a hostile environment for Penn State, in particular their offense. When we’re really loud in the stadium, anytime that their offense has the ball, it makes it very difficult to operate the communication, the snap count, all of those things and so the louder we can be, it doesn’t matter whether it’s third down, red zone, short yardage, if they’re operating and they’re on the field, the louder we can be, the more hostile that we can be, advantage Buckeyes.”

American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco released a statement Friday in response to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s addition of Southern Methodist University.

After nearly three-plus weeks of discussions and possibilities, SMU officially announced its plan to join the ACC beginning July 1, 2024, on Friday. It will join the ACC along with former Pac-12 Conference members Cal and Stanford.

“We have known that today’s move was a possibility, which has allowed us time to investigate a number of options, including consideration of the larger group of institutions in the Pacific time zone,” Aresco stated in a release. “We have concluded, however, that the best way to proceed for our outstanding student-athletes is to not look westward.”

A statement from Commissioner Mike Aresco pic.twitter.com/tKomAfsAdt
— The American (@American_Conf) September 1, 2023

Given the AAC will no longer pursue westward expansion, it will instead “focus any expansion efforts on schools that allow for sensible and sustainable competition and student-athlete well-being within our strong geographic footprint,” according to a release.

“SMU has shared our pursuit of competition at the highest level throughout its time in the American Athletic Conference,” Aresco stated in a release. “President Gerald Turner and Athletic Director Rick Hart have been among our strongest advocates and leaders both internally and externally. We wish them well.”

Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are 1-0 to begin the 2023 season.

No. 13 Notre Dame jumped ahead to a 28-0 halftime lead and earned a 42-3 victory in Dublin, Ireland, over Navy during the kickoff to the 2023 season on Saturday.

Audric Estime and Notre Dame ran for 88 combined yards in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Estime set the Fighting Irish up with a 10-yard gain on the first offensive play of the game and Wake Forest transfer quarterback Sam Hartman followed it up with a 19-yard completion to wide receiver Jayden Thomas.

Notre Dame scored touchdowns during each of its first five possessions and kept the Midshipmen from the end zone.

Freeman and Notre Dame now begin the season on a winning note after beginning the 2022 campaign with back-to-back losses.

Notre Dame claims first ranked win of season

The Fighting Irish defense, which allowed opponents to average 328.6 yards per game last season, allowed 114 — all rushing — yards in the first half and 55 total yards in the second. Navy had four big plays of at least 10 yards and Notre Dame seemingly had an answer for each.

Notre Dame nearly had a pair of fumble recoveries as linebacker Marist Liufau knocked the ball away from Midshipmen ball-carrier Eli Heidenreich with 13:40 to go in the second quarter. Official review showed that the Fighting Irish recovered the football out of bounds. The Fighting Irish also forced another fumble on the opening drive of the second half after a pitch miscue that was recovered by Navy.

Offensively, the Fighting Irish provided a stout front that protected Hartman and paved the way for the ground game. Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt and the Fighting Irish offensive line helped set the lanes for 191 rushing yards and allowed two tackles for loss and no sacks.

The win sets the tone for the Top 25 and the rest of college football, which will see most every team compete when Week 1 kicks off in one week.

Hartman dazzles in Fighting Irish

The Wake Forest transfer quarterback wasted little time getting acclimated to the Notre Dame offense.

Hartman managed a 19-yard completion on his first pass attempt and later found the end zone twice in the second quarter.

The former Third Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference member threw for 266 yards on a 19-for-23 completion rate.

Perhaps no greater sign of his maturity and experience came during Hartman’s first touchdown pass of the second half.

With 9:36 left in the third quarter, Hartman dropped back in the pocket and maneuvered his way back toward the line of scrimmage. He leaned into a pass on the run and found wide receiver Jaden Greathouse for his second touchdown of the game.

Hartman performed well in his first game wearing a Notre Dame uniform, including a stretch of nine-consecutive completions through the end of the first quarter and most of the second. He’ll have a three-game stretch against Tennessee State, NC State and Central Michigan before a home matchup against No. 3 Ohio State on Sept. 23.

Navy searches for momentum in Newberry’s debut

The Midshipmen faced a tough challenge in their first game of the season.

Under first-year head coach Brian Newberry, Navy featured its patented triple-option offense against Notre Dame. The triple-option spearheaded the Fighting Irish defense and made up Navy’s first-half total offense entirely.

Navy reached the red zone twice, once in the first half and during its final offensive drive of the game. The Midshipmen led a 15-play drive that set them up in field goal position with 3:33 left to play.

Midshipmen quarterback Tai Lavatai hurled a 39-yard completion to receiver Brandon Chatman to cross midfield late in the fourth quarter and kicker Evan Warren made his only of two field goal tries from 31 yards away.

Navy finished with 169 yards of offense and 126 of which came on the ground. Lavatai threw for 43 yards and three ball-carriers had at least 30 rushing yards.

Newberry and Navy will turn their focus to their home opener against Wagner which is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kick two weeks away on Sept. 9.

Our long national nightmare is almost over. Just one more miserable morning without college football Saturdays waking us up with a kiss on the cheek and a toasty-sweet McGriddle placed next to our sweat-soaked pillows.

It’s not quite kegs and eggs, but we had to grow up sometime.

Saturday is Week Zero for college football, and while it’s not the best week of the season, it’s better than the feckless, Fickell-less hellscape we’ve been living in since January.

But we’re here now, and you better believe we’re going to enjoy every moment of it.

Each week of this college football season I’ll be taking a look at the 10 best games to watch, and throwing in a few questionably valid tips here and there.

I would say that everything that follows from here is for entertainment purposes only, but that sounds both arrogant and presumptuous.

Saturday August 26

Chaminade-Madonna (FL) vs. St. Frances Academy (MD) | 12:00 pm | ESPN

Jeremiah Smith is the No. 1 receiver in the 2024 recruiting class.

Look, when it’s Week Zero and you’ve come up with a gimmick of where you have to write about 10 games and there aren’t 10 college games to write about, you dip into the high school ranks. I’m basically a McDonald’s from 1991 looking for employees. I cannot promise competitive wages, paid time off, or opportunity for advancement, but fortunately gas is only $1.47 a gallon in this timeline, so it won’t cost you that much to get here. I can, however, give you every other weekend off, provided you can get somebody to cover your shift for the weekends you won’t be working. We also provide a 15% discount on meals for employees (No McDLTs). Anyway, back to the present day, you’re gonna be so ramped up after watching College Gameday that you’re going to need something to watch RIGHT EFFING NOW. I give you Chaminade-Madonna against St. Frances. Two of the best high school programs around. Chaminade-Madonna has the best receiver room in the nation that isn’t located in Columbus. That room includes five-star prospects Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State commit) and JoJo Trader (Miami commit). Meanwhile, St. Frances has a defense with more future collegians than a country club daycare. It’ll be fun. This will scratch your itch better than the ruler you keep on your desk.

Navy vs. Notre Dame (-21) (Dublin) | 2:30 pm | NBC |

The Irish were favored by 16.5 over Navy last year, and nearly covered, beating the Midshipmen 35-32. That game came after an oddly dominating 35-14 win over Clemson where the Irish treated the Tigers like a Midwesterner treats a Myrtle Beach Motel 6 after an extra large Papa John’s and a 2-liter of Big K cola. There will be no let down this week, unless the Notre Dame players end up in one too many pubs. I have to assume there are more things to do in Ireland than visit pubs and golf in the rain, but I’ve never seen proof in the movies. There is no better time to play an option team than in the season opener, so give Notre Dame credit for not being idiots here. They’ve been preparing for this game for months. Let’s just expect a slow start offensively for both squads, which leads me to (1) liking the under on 49.5.

UTEP at Jacksonville State (+1.5) | 5:30 pm | CBSSN

Jacksonville State is the very last team in Phil Steele’s preview magazine, which is like being the last kid picked in fifth-grade dodgeball. Even behind the kid who strikes out in kickball (that would be Sam Houston, by the way). This is Jacksonville State’s first game as a member of the FBS, so this is going to be the biggest thing to hit Jacksonville, Alabama since Cooter Brown’s Rib Shack opened 23 years ago. Rich Rodriguez is the head coach at Jacksonville State. He went 9-2 last year in his first year with the program. If there’s one thing we know about RichRod, it’s that if you hand him the keys, he can win anywhere in the country.*
*Offer not valid in Ann Arbor

UMass at New Mexico State (-7) | 7:00 pm | ESPN

Don Brown, the King of Loners With No Bowers. Photo credit UMassAthletics.com

This game features UMass head coach Don Brown against New Mexico State head coach Jerry Kill. If they were to partner up in a Euchre tournament and auction off the opportunity to spend the evening playing against them, I would spend an unfortunate amount of money to take part. I’d love to just sit and talk with them both over beers and cards. Plus I’d feel pretty good about my team’s chances of winning because you know Don Brown is always getting his partner euchred. The frustration from Jerry Kill would be intense. “How the hell are you going alone when I have the Right and the Left, Don!?” Also, (2) let’s go with the Aggies -7 here.

Ohio at San Diego State (-3) | 7:00 pm | FS1

Never before has an Ohio vs. San Diego State game been so anticipated. For one, there’s not a lot else going on. For two, this could be SDSU head coach Brady Hoke’s first real opportunity at a win over “Ohio.” If you’re a Bobcat fan, you just have to hope your team doesn’t get distracted by all of the amazing things to do in California and not bother to show up for a sporting event. Don’t be surprised when there is a vocal presence from the Ohio fans in the crowd. It’s a week-long drive back and forth, but it’s better than going to work. If you’re looking for some action, (3) bang the over on 0.5 touchdown receptions for Bobcat receiver Sam Wiglusz.

IMG Academy (FL) vs. St. Joseph’s Prep (PA) (Ocean City, NJ) | 7:00 pm | ESPN2

Yes, it’s another high school game, but there will be some talent on hand. IMG generally has half of Florida’s top 30 prospects. St. Joseph’s Prep has all kinds of FBS talent on hand as well. Interestingly, this could be a matchup that is watched closely in the Ohio State receivers room as St. Joseph’s Prep is where All-American Marvin Harrison, Jr. went to school, and IMG is where Marvin Harrison, Jr. Jr. went to school. You probably won’t tune in because you’ll be up to your ears in New Mexico State football. Just be careful not to let Aggie Football actually get into your ears, however, because it will lay eggs.

Hawaii at Vanderbilt (-17.5) | 7:30 pm | SECN

Vanderbilt went into Hawaii last year as 9.5-point and won 63-10, so 17.5 points seems very doable. (4) Some folks may have already gotten in at -17, but 17.5 still seems fine. Vandy is coming off of a season where they went 2-1 in their final three games against Kentucky, Florida, and Tennessee last year. That’s the kind of momentum that could mean something for any program other than Vanderbilt.

San Jose State at USC (-30.5) | 8:00 pm | P12N

You know those guys in The Lord of the Rings whose sole purpose is to sit up in the signal towers 24 hours a day looking to see if any other towers miles away raise a fire to signal danger or the need for help? That’s kind of how I feel about this game because I am one of the tower watchers who actually has the Pac 12 Network. I will be watching this fire and signaling to others via Twitter about what’s happening. Like, “Oh no, Gollum just went for 65 yards up the middle against Alex Grinch’s defense. Muster the Rohirrim!” When he is healthy, USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the best player in the country, so I think it’s okay to have a lot riding on him this week against the Spartans. That includes a five-leg parlay of (5) USC -10.5 in the first quarter, (6) USC over 40.5 points, (7) USC over 13.5 first quarter points, (8) USC -16.5 in the first half, and of course it wouldn’t be a USC game without also taking a sniff at their defense, so let’s add (9) San Jose State over 9.5 points. Watch for the towers, my friends, and be prepared to act.

FIU at Louisiana Tech (-11.5) | 9:00 pm | CBSSN

Sonny Cumbie, pictured here as a 2004 starter for league champions Team Awesome. Photo credit TexasTech.com

This game went to two overtimes last year, with FIU coming out with the 42-34 win. Former Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie is in his second season as the head coach at La Tech and my loyalty to him goes back to my old college fantasy football days. He may finally have a quarterback now with former Boise State Bronco Hank Bachmeier, who has had some good moments as a starter in his career. He has 13 career games with at least 250 yards passing. Florida International, meanwhile, hasn’t won a game since that double-overtime outing against the Bulldogs. Let’s go ahead and get back on the Sonny Cumbie train and (10) lay the 11.5. You only go broke once, right?

Mater Dei Catholic (CA) at Carlsbad (CA) | 10:00 pm | ESPN2

If you want to know why USC and UCLA bolted for the Big Ten, here’s one glimpse as to the reason — 95% of America can’t watch the University of Southern California play on Saturday night, but they can watch two California high schools play against each other. Carlsbad features five-star Alabama quarterback commit Julian Sayin, who will sign with Nick Saban in December but eventually play for Lane Kiffin when Saban retires.
