Reigning national champion Michigan has added a defensive back from the Mountain West Conference via the transfer portal.

Former UNLV defensive back Ricky Johnson announced on social media Saturday his commitment to transfer and join the Wolverines after four seasons with the Rebels.

Johnson will be part of new head coach Sherrone Moore’s first season at the helm of Michigan’s program. The 6-foot-1 defensive back is a veteran of 30 games, including a career-high 12 last season after battling back from an injury in fall camp 2022 that limited him to three games that year, who has compiled 78 tackles, four interceptions and 14 passes defended.

Johnson posted career bests across a number of statistical categories in 2023. He totaled 36 tackles, including 25 solo and a season-high six against Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, in addition to seven passes defended, which tied for 10th-most in the Mountain West Conference, and three tackles for loss. He was also named to the preseason all-conference third team before the campaign.

Johnson broke out in 2021 when his three interceptions tied for the UNLV team lead. He collected 25 tackles and two pass break-ups. The Houston native is also a standout in the classroom, having been a three-time member of the Academic All-Mountain West Team from 2020-22 and earning recognition as a 2021 Mountain West Scholar Athlete.

UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper announced Friday that head coach Barry Odom received an additional year and future retention bonuses onto his contract which extends through 2028.

Odom, who was hired in December 2022, led the Rebels to a 9-5 season last year, a four-win improvement from the previous campaign, and their highest win total since 1984. UNLV appeared in its first Mountain West Championship game and first bowl game since 2013.

Here is Odom’s full statement in a release.

“On behalf of our coaching staff and our football program I’d like to thank President (Keith E.) Whitfield, the Board of Regents, and obviously Erick Harper for their sustained commitment not only to myself and our staff, but also to our entire football organization as we continue to grow and elevate our program to a national level,” Odom stated. “I’m excited about the foundation we have built in the past 16 months and I certainly look forward to our strong future. I’m thankful for our staff and our student-athletes — they are on a mission to win a championship. I’m also thankful for the tremendous support we receive from the UNLV community, its fans and business partners and the extraordinary city of Las Vegas as we build a program in which we can all be proud. Together, I’m confident that we will continue to move the program forward and have success.”

Odom earned Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2023 becoming the first UNLV coach to do so since 2000, and he was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award which he was also the first from UNLV to accomplish.

UNLV won five-straight games from Weeks 3-8 en route to finishing atop the Mountain West. Odom oversaw the Rebels offense averaging 34.43 points per game, best in the conference last season.

In the classroom, UNLV attained the program’s “highest cumulative grade point average at 3.22” and “first First Team Academic All-America honoree,” according to a release.

“We are obviously thrilled about what Barry Odom and his staff did in year one leading Rebel football,” Harper stated in a release. “The program is on an upward trajectory and we could not be more excited about him leading the way. Barry continues to be a man of his word, focusing on growing all phases of the program the right way. He is committed to his players, coaches and staff and with the newly expanded CFP he is laying a foundation that gives Rebel Football a chance to compete at the highest level. I look forward to working with Coach Odom for years to come.”

Arizona announced Monday that it named former Missouri athletics director Desireé Reed-Francois to the same position.

Reed-Francois will begin her tenure with the Wildcats in Tucson, Arizona, on March 3.

READ: Reports: CFP still awaiting new TV contract

“There are very few institutions that would entice me to leave an SEC athletics department with strong momentum,” Reed-Francois stated in a release. “The University of Arizona has tremendous potential and is an institution — and an athletics program — on the rise, and I want to be a part of shaping that future. We will provide a world-class student-athlete experience, which includes competing for championships and being among the nation’s elite. I am grateful to President (Robert C.) Robbins and the Arizona Board of Regents for this incredible opportunity.”

Reed-Francois had been at Missouri since 2021. She oversaw the Tigers’ first budget surplus in six years and led them into the Name, Image and Likeness era.

According to a release, Reed-Francois agreed to a five-year contract with an annal base salary of $1 million elevating to $1.2 million in the fifth year. There are “additional incentive compensation based on the department’s athletic and academic success, as well as retention bonuses after four and five years of employment with the University.”

Reed-Francois also spent time at Fresno State, Santa Clara, San Jose State, the University of California Berkeley and San Francisco. She also was Deputy Athletics Director at Virginia Tech, Senior Associate Athletics Director at Cincinnati, Senior Associate Athletics Director at Tennessee, and the athletics director at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Reed-Francois earned her juris doctorate from James E. Rogers College of Law at Arizona in 1997. She will have the chance to lead the Wildcats into the Big 12 Conference as they depart the Pac-12 later this year.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Desireé to the University of Arizona family, and we could not be more excited about the leadership experience and outstanding credentials she brings,” Robbins stated in a release. “Respected nationally for her commitment to student-athletes, Desireé has a history of success everywhere she’s served and is exactly the right person we need to modernize our athletics operations and usher in an ongoing culture of success in all aspects of Athletics. This is a tremendous win for our university and I cannot wait for her to get started.”

New Mexico State underwent a change at head coach on Saturday, as Jerry Kill stepped down after two seasons.

Kill led the Aggies to 17 wins over two seasons including a 10-win campaign in 2022 which was the program’s first since 1960.

“Firstly, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the New Mexico State administration—President Jay Gogue, Mario Moccia, and Braun Cartwright,” Kill stated in a release. “They’ve been invaluable in our achievements over the last two years. I also want to express my deep gratitude to the people of Las Cruces. Aggie Nation has been incredibly supportive, and I will always be thankful for the opportunity I was given to lead their team. This year has been tremendously difficult for me, and I gave it everything I had physically, mentally and emotionally. New Mexico State holds a special place in my heart as it marks the end of my journey as a head coach. While I’ll remain involved with the Aggies, I recognize the need for a head coach with a lot of energy. Good luck to Coach Sanchez, the student-athletes and New Mexico State University.”

The Aggies and athletics director Mario Moccia named wide receivers coach Tony Sanchez the team’s next head coach.

Sanchez has been with the New Mexico State program for two seasons under Kill.

Sanchez previously was head coach at UNLV from 2015-19.

The next steps for the Pac-12 Conference could go a number of directions.

One of those directions could be to join and collaborate with the Mountain West Conference, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports. Dellenger reported that the Mountain West “is receptive” to working with the Pac-12 to determine best courses of action.

An obstacle that could hinder the ability for the Pac-12 to possibly merge with the Mountain West is the exit fee per school in the latter conference. Dellenger reported that for a Mountain West program to leave in time for 2024 then the exit fee is about $34 million.

The Mountain West currently has 12 programs in its conference. On the other hand, as the dust settled on a historic past week surrounding conference expansion, the Pac-12 is left with four schools: Cal, Oregon State, Stanford and Washington State.

If the Pac-12 and Mountain West are able to work something out to continue the legacies of each respective conference, potential matchups could pit Utah State against Oregon State or Air Force against Stanford.

According to Brian McInnis of Spectrum News Hawaii, Hawaii football head coach Timmy Chang said he thinks the Mountain West is the best Group of 5 conference and that “however this thing shakes out, I feel comfortable about where we are as a conference and group.”
